More on Panasonic player https://www.avforums.com/news/panaso...y-player.10997
Press Release http://www.prnewswire.com/news-relea...300015515.html

This prototype integrates video processing and optical disc drive technologies that Panasonic has refined over many years, making it capable of reproducing 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixel), 60p, 10-bit high resolution video, and supporting the latest technologies such as High Dynamic Range that marks a major leap in the brightness peak from the previous 100 nit3 to 1,000-10,000 nit to improve the power of expression; wide colour gamut standard BT.2020[4], which greatly increases colour reproduction; high-efficiency video compression technology HEVC (H.265)/ Blu-ray Disc playback at a high bit rate of 100Mbps.*

This marks a major advance in picture quality over current Blu-ray Disc players, and paves the way towards allowing consumers to enjoy the crisp, true-to-life quality of amazing 4K Ultra HD content in their own homes.

Its still a prototype, long ways to go, playback devices, media from studio after standards have been agreed to. The BT.2020 is also for 12 bit color, so this is only 10 bit support. That in turn makes us curious to what the studios will allow.

I will get a player when they drop around $80 and I can find the movies in a $7.88 bin at Wal-mart next to the blu-rays.

Looking at all of these new 4K models announced I am not seeing anywhere about them being 3D capable. Are they completely dropping 3D support?

Is 100 Mbps better or worse than expected? Given that speed how big will the discs be?

They said anywhere between 66 and 100 so I would say it's pretty good.

They said disc capacity would be 66 GB or 100 GB, nothing about bit rate before AFAIK.

How is there "all of these new 4K models being announced"? You have a Panasonic 4k prototype being discussed only.

Serious I don't think 3D is that interesting anymore. If you watch the weekly releases check how many legacy titles are offered in 3D? One of the benefits of native 4K is improved depth perception, not necessary astounding but getting there.

4K BD, **** YEAH! That Panny deck looks remarkably similar to Panny's own BDT700, which fitted as much 4K support as it could around the existing BD spec without actually being able to play back 4K material. The 700 was clearly a dry run which will enable Panasonic to build on the bare bones of that machine to deliver a true 4K player. Hopefully it won't cost much more than what the 700 commands, about £400-£500.

Rec. 2020 still allows for 10-bit sampling rates and I HIGHLY doubt that 4K BD will have 12-bit video in the spec, so it's not something I'll lose sleep over. Perhaps we'll get 12-bit for UHD Phase 2 in four or five years, but for now =

I was referring to the upcoming 4K TELEVISION sets being revealed.

That is actually my point. Disney 3D animation films have only been getting released overseas lately and if all of the upcoming 4K TV's coming out this year don't even support 3D that is going to be another hammer into the nail of the 3D coffin which is sad. One of the slight downsides to the 3D has always been the slight loss in resolution when wearing the glasses and 4K resolution would have helped make up for that. Makes me question now if we will even ever see a 4K 3D Blu-ray release. =/

And just because you don't like it no need to respond about your dislike for it. I was just asking a question hoping to get an answer being a fan of 3D films.

Sorry saw the thread topic assumed you were discussing players not UDTV's. When I commented on the lack of 3D interest I was talking about the relative marketplace as a whole is very lackluster to any 2D to 3D conversions anymore, maybe not the best choice of wordage.

You also have this very recent news
Dolby & Warner Bros. Announce First 4K Dolby Vision Titles, including 'The Lego Movie' and 'Edge of Tomorrow'

Quote:
Warner Bros. and Dolby have announced a partnership to bring select titles to over-the-top media platforms in 4K Dolby Vision. Dolby Vision is a new imaging technology that results in improved brightness, contrast, and color.

"The future of imaging and television is full of amazing possibilities, and we're eager to expand our partnership with Dolby to deliver a steady pipeline of Dolby Vision titles, starting with Edge of Tomorrow, Into the Storm, and The Lego Movie, to consumers in 2015," said Jim Wuthrich, President, Americas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. "By leveraging Dolby Vision to unlock artistic intent in a completely new way, we are able to provide home audiences around the world with dramatically enhanced picture quality that fully engages their senses and brings Warner Bros. movies to life in their living room."
I sure everyone is wondering about why "The Lego Movie"?

With the 4K bluray format supporting 60fps, does that mean we may see The Hobbit in 48fps being ported over?

I might hold off from buying the boxset this year if thats the case...

The top end is exactly as expected so as not to restrict the most robust of parameter sets for frame rate content up to 60p.
