I believe that 3D just makes sense. Evolution granted human beings with depth perception. Some animals have there eyes to the sides of there heads. This gives them a greater feild of vision to spot Predators but gives them poor depth perception. Humans as well as most predatory animals eyes face forward. This gives us a more limited feild of vision but better enables us to properly assign depth to the world. As with anything in evolution there are always tradeoffs. This was a great survival adaption that better enabled our ancient ancesters to survive and thus Natural selection favored those with better depth perception and its this fact that makes 3D relevent
As movies are an illusion that fool our eyes into believing that groups of colored pixels are real objects in front of us. But movies are limited to what the audience can see and taking advantage of the audiences sense. If the audience can't detect it the innovation is useless. Color succeeded because most people see the world in color and color movies greater resemble how most of the audience sees the world than Black and White movies do. The same goes for higher resolution video. The higher the pixel resolution the more lifelike detail can be seen and the more a movie resembles the real world. 3D is just like these previous innovations. Over 90% of people have two properly functioning eyes that give them a greater sense of depth to the real world. 3D movies resemble the way they view the world more greatly than 2D movies do and thats why people like me like 3D Thats my answer and Im sticking with it |

Isn't Best Buy just flat out struggling in general against the online market place ? I heard they were downsizing B&M stores and beefing up web sales. Besides, despite a less than stellar initial response, 3DTVs are still penetrating at an equal rate to other TV innovations. Which means that while the industry's attempt to leverage 3D as a premium product with premium pricing backfired in the short-term, it's still very likely to succeed in the long run. Bet on penetration keeping pace with expanding content and falling prices. Mostly though, I think 3D is finding it's footing at the grassroots level because early adopters, which usually research and understand their new tech, make much better and convincing guides to the third dimension that the kids in blue shirts. I've seen my HT convert more than one person to a believer and I highly doubt I'm alone in that. Last edited by etype55; 08-01-2011 at 09:37 PM. |

3DTV's may not be selling as good as the vendors would like.
3DTV's may not be "free" for people who qualify as "poor". But,... It's fun... that's all it needs to be for me. I can't wait for PotC, Cars 2, Rio, and so many other 3D Blu Rays. It's fun and for me it doesn't take anything away from non-3D presentations. -Brian |

What worries me about 3D at home is are we seeing a deliberate slow roll-out of the technology?
Remember when they introduced digital TV. The manufacturers already had the HD technology, but instead of releasing it with the digital technology, they got everyone to buy a digital TV, then they released HD TVs and made everyone feel their new TV was obsolete and that they HAD to have HD sets. What I am saying is, is there an ultimate 3D technology waiting in the wings. But the powers-to-be won't release it until everyone has bought the current technology(s). ![]() |

Let me make it clear
BLU-RAY 3D IS DISPLAY AGNOISTIC Meaning that it can be adapted to any future 3D display technlogies. Meaning that in terms of 1080p 3D Blu-Ray 3D is the be all and end all. Not that there won't be better 3D technolgies like 4k 3D sometime in the distant future but the idea that they are holding something back from us is absurd |

3D on the other hand is not so simple. The vast majority of movies were shot in 2D and I highly doubt that most 2D catalogs will ever come to Blu-Ray 3D. Since it costs $150,000 per minute to properly convert live action the 3D market will need to expand dramatically for 3D conversions to be worth there cost. If were lucky I suspect really big catalogs if there filmmakers approve may be converted to 3D but for smaller known titles you may treasure I doubt it will ever happen |

A format will not be successful without a strong catalog. 3D conversion is costly so mostly only recently filmed movies will be released in 3D. There will, of course, be exceptions but without a strong catalog 3D will not take off. Right now it is still novelty/gimmick status. If 3D filming retains its support from its stakeholder's (10 years from now?) there should be enough titles to warrant the change over. Until it actually happens it will just be a novelty/gimmick.
Just mine opinion |
