I don't think I am wrong. I don't think it'll be 10 years before 3D without glasses will be around and I would not want to spend thousands of dollars on equipment and movies just to have it all replaced later on. I'll stick to my non 3D blu-ray. Heck the sony 3D projector is $10K. |

I watched some movies in 3-D at my buddy's place last weekend. It was via front projector and was pretty impressive with his 100+ plus screen. Alas, my setup does not allow for a front projector so the most I could pull off would be 60" flat panel. I sit just over 8 feet away from my current 50" screen. I wonder how immersive a 60" set would be at that distance?
What bugs me right now is the lack of standardization between glasses and sets. I am going to see how the next 2-3 years go and where this all goes. I see myself using 3-D for gaming, certain sporting events, and select movies. Even if glasses are always required it would not bother me with the criteria I have set for myself... |

I can understand why you wouldnt want to watch things in 3D. But I dont understand this. You say it takes away the picture clarity? How so?

I really do wonder how many people who complain about 3D have actually spent more than 30 seconds in front of a 3DTV ensuring that the glasses were turned on... or are basing their opinion entirely on theatrical REAL 3D technology. Everytime I go into Best Buy, Future Shop, or Sony Store, there are people trying to try the 3D TVs and don't have the glasses turned on. Even after I turn the glasses on for them, they usually watch for about 10-15 seconds, say "interesting," put the glasses down and then leave. So, I think that many complainers haven't given it appropriate demo exposure time. |

Blu-ray is not a fad nor is 3D. They're both options for consumers. There's little competition between the three formats (DVD, Blu-ray/3D) but none of them will take over completely which is good. I'm trying to get into 3D also but it doesn't have lossless audio (that I know of). Plus, it's not available to rent yet (that I know of) and they're expensive to buy. I'm gonna wait another year or two before I pull the trigger.

I am equipped to display 3D content, but haven't set up my system for it (Panny DMP-BDT300 player has two HDMI outs so that I can direct audio to my non HDMI 1.4 Pioneer Elite SC-05 receiver).
Just haven't felt the urge to get into 3D, but it's nice to know that I could jump into it anytime without any additional purchases or upgrades. |

People are not buying the highest end TVs. Up until this summer, the majority of TVs being purchased are reduced price clearance units from previous production lines. 3DTV sales will begin to skyrocket as the current models will begin to drop in price and the newer models coming out (high AND low end) this year will all have 3D built into them. So, with a much larger percentage of units on the market having 3D capabilities, the number of those units being sold will also increase. A little common sense leads me to believe that 3D will succeed. |

I see what you're saying but without the proper equipment, it won't be the same and the content may appear awkward. In my opinion, you'll get a better experience with the proper equipment.

They are actually getting quite affordable lately. I picked up my first 3D title last week for $15 (with manufacturer and store coupons). Last edited by drummerboy_2002; 04-08-2011 at 04:12 PM. |

3D is probably here to stay largely because of what is and will be a false sense of success with it. Now that many manufacturers are only making larger HDTVs with the 3D feature built in (and there aren't making and 2D-only TVs without 3D), when people go to buy them, they will have no other choice.
And each time one sells, the 'powers that be' will spin this to make it sound like 3D is wonderfully successful, when many people who buy these sets may not be using it at all. It just feels like something being shoehorned upon the public that the masses didn't really ask for and don't necessarily want, but have little to no choice to avoid it. |

Interesting perspective. Can you show me the data that lead you to these conclusions? Any surveys? How large were the samples ? What was your articulation? Last edited by etype55; 04-08-2011 at 02:41 PM. |
