The reality is in the 50’s studios/theatres needed a draw and had a pick of two techs for it colour that had been lightly used for over 10 years but relatively cheap and 3D that was extremely expensive. The two went head to head early 50’s but eventually they saw colour as a big enough draw and so abandoned 3D because it was much more expensive until the 80’s when anaglyph was tried but anaglyph messed up the pic too much and now 3D is relatively cheap and easy and the image is not colour limited.

There you have it. The public preferred color over 3D. I believe they ditched 3D because admissions were weakening. It doesnt matter if 3D was expensive and complicated. If it FILLED theaters, the studios/theaters would just charge more. Simple supply and demand. If there is demand for a product, a company will find a way to make a profit from it. If the demand goes away, so does the product. 3D disappeared twice because AUDIENCES failed to consume the product, not because studios abandoned a tech that audiences loved.

I dont have a crystal ball for the future, and the new tech is vastly superior to the old stuff, so we have to wait and see.

But you're talking about the 1950's here, it's a bit stupid to try to make a point about today based on the 1950's, it was a completely different time and market and all forms of technology were much different and less advanced compared to today. Obviously colour is more important and needed to come 1st, I'm sure we all agree on that, so they made the right choice at the time, but the same obstacle isn't in front of them this time around, there's no choice to be made between 1 or the other.

Imagine if they choose 3d instead of colour, and we had been using it for the last 60 years but were still watching tv in black and white, how idiotic would that be.

Most people haven't converted to 2D Blu-Ray yet, let alone 3D Blu-Ray!

The public isn't pleased with rapid changes in anything expensive. They didn't like building a massive VHS collection only to have DVD come along and the same thing with building a massive DVD collection only to have Blu-Ray come along. No store that sells used media is buying VHS. They're worthless now. What do you advise people do with all of their VHS'? Throw them in the garbage? Is there a place in every city and town where you can get your VHS' re-cycled? Will DVD go the same way? Will they be worthless and unsellable some day too? Will 2d Blu-Rays? The length of time between format changes is getting shorter and shorter. Some people don't know what to do, what to put faith and money in. Most people don't have the cash to keep changing every time a new format or technology comes along!

If you truly love movies you won't support 3D!

who coted you as mouthpiece of the public? As a memebr of the public I definetly demanded HD (and so BD) long before BD came out. As for 3D the public always wants something better and since they go to watch 3D movies I am guessing they want 3D.

As for people that just bought 2D sets, if they are happy with them then they can continue watching them and others that want 3D now can buy new 3D TVs. why is taht a bad thing. No one is forcing anyone to buy anything.

Take a chill pill man. No one is forcing anyone to do anything. There are tons of people who are just satisfied with DVD and have no interest in Blurays. Good for them and it's their choice. No one is forcing them to go buy a bluray palyer. Who are you to go on some hate rant telling anyone who truly loves movies to not support the 3D format. What a joke. Well let me enlighten you a bit and say that I (and I'm very confident that there are many others) am a HUGE and true movie lover and I LOVE 3D.

IMO, 3D TV's and 3D Blu-ray's are here to stay.

As long as Hollywood and Television deploy 3D as a media art influence to the masses, people will yearn for a way to duplicate that intended look at home. Just like old masterpiece paintings created by the greats, the public will always want the magical influence and ethereal feeling an object is able to produce and which is easily valued as a personal guilty pleasure for enrichment, societal growth and education that can hit home where one lives.

History has shown it takes time and money for the duplication to trickle down to everyone.

The moment i got a ps2 i started not caring about vhs since dvd looked much better and the convenience factor. Same thing with the ps3 since it was my first bluray player i didn't look back on dvd unless it isn't available. I still own some dvds that might not make it to blu anytime soon but once its upgraded good riddance.

Now for 3d blus i am not going to upgrade anything i already have unless its native 3d or some magic makes the 3d work as something shot in 3d. Like many others have said all bluray formats are here to stay and can coexist so your last statement is wrong and i will support 3d bluray because i enjoy it. I guess alot of 3d haters think like you and now i see that they are misinformed much like the bluray haters in the beginning of its life a few years ago.

Hehe so angry. I'm going to take a leap and say that deep down, you really want a 3DTV, but you had already pulled the trigger on a 2D and so now you're just bitter that you took the wrong boat.

Relax, there's no reason to hate choices. Choices are good. Besides, did you know you can put together a 3D home theater with a 100" or more screen for right around a $1000? I recently did ..and dude it looks really effing spectacular. Personally, I am myself annoyed that I pulled the trigger a top shelf 3DTV before seeing how damn good these DLP 3D projectors are at it. I would have chosen a regular 2D for regular TV, and the projector for movies. As it is now we might sell the Panasonic since its movie playing days are gone.

But that's just it! I remember wrapping aluminum foil around some bunny ears so I could watch Wild West without waves, so guess what ... I am nothing but grateful for all of our options. It's bloody fantastic.

Well said...I agree, the masses won't pick it up for a while, but as a niche market, it could survive, and I have anything to say about it, it WILL survive lol. 3D is far from a fad, it's finally here to stay!

Your complaints can be applied to every form of high-tech technology. You buy a computer and 6 months later, there is something better and faster.

Hell, 2 months after I bought my 2D 50” Pioneer Elite, they offered a deal for the same price that included an extra plasma tv. If only I had waited. Such is the nature of early adoption.

But maybe you really meant to complain about capitalism rather than 3D technology. Like someone said, you don’t have to buy into it. There will always be 2D tv’s. Having an option for people who want to watch their blu-ray in 3D will not hurt the format or home theater. It’s not one or the other so your complaint is not valid.

That's like complaining about a car that comes optionally with cruise control. You don't HAVE to use it. It's just an extra option. If you don't like 3d then don't watch 3d movies.

Honestly, I don't even remember what I did with my VHS tapes. And honestly, I don't even care ha ha.

I'm to the point now where I won't even buy a movie if it's not a 3D Blu-ray. And will rarely, if ever, go to a movie in the theater if it's not 3D anymore. Netflix more than satisfies all of my 2D movie needs for a low price. I just hope that 3D Blu-rays will become available on Netflix sometime in the near future. Because there are those I would like to see, but don't really want to have to buy them to see them. And those that would be nice to rent, to see if I like them enough to buy them.
