How was he over the top or sloppy? Not even the best fighters can deal with lots of enemies coming from all sides at once.

The whole point of Legolas and Gimli being friends in "Rings" was to show how people overcome unjust bias and/or prejudice. Sixty years earlier, Legolas would've been strictly against Dwarves, so his comments with Gloin make sense.

As for his relationship with Thranduil, I wouldn't be surprised if that comes to a head in the new film.

It's not the source material which is the problem with the movies.

When Thorin saves him from an enemy right behind him, that's slightly acceptable, though still somewhat unbelievable considering the hyper-awareness elves display (I always internalize it somewhat like Spiderman's Spidey Sense). That still would have been fine, however there really was no excuse for Tauriel saving him moments later when the fighting had died down and he nearly got shot by an arrow. We already know he would have either heard the bow being pulled (because the orc shooting the arrow would have been somewhat nearby), or would have heard the arrow flying through the air (again, hyperdrive senses).

After all, a bit later Tauriel senses Legolas drawing his bow with an arrow strung, and he's quite a way off. Unless Legolas just had earplugs in the whole time, I can't make sense of what happens with his character here.

Perhaps I just have to accept that Jackson deviated from his character momentarily to create a bit more excitement, as he is wont to do.

Maybe he would have been, but although Legolas's father threw Gloin in jail, had Tauriel not been a character, Legolas could have instead chased after the dwarves and had some interaction with Gloin which, though not changing his mind completely about dwarves, might have begun to soften his heart leading up to the events of the Fellowship being formed. After all, consider that Legolas is already hundreds, possibly thousands of years old. It takes time to change the perception of old grudges (e.g. the sacking of Doriath), and a positive interaction with Gloin might have yielded something from Legolas akin to, "Perhaps there's more honor in dwarves now than the elves have known in ages past." The line itself is unimportant, but the acknowledgement that perhaps there is something more than mindless hatred, that would have been a start.

I don't recall Legolas being quite as antagonistic of Gimli so much as the other way around, so this sort of thing may have worked. Sadly, it never will/can be now.

I posit that it would have been better for the conflict to have occurred in DoS, then resolved with Thranduil coming to an understanding that he must think beyond his kingdom and care about the fate of Middle Earth in TBo5A.

Why? Because Legolas is sent by his father to the council that decides the fate of the One Ring in Fellowship to alert the council to Gollum's escape from the Woodland Realm. At this point the relationship between Legolas and Thranduil must be reasonably good, so Jackson must (or should) leave their relationship on a positive note in TBo5A. I think that it's difficult to create an effective dramatic arc with films of this scope if you don't let the tension build and the anger grumble for a time, especially with elves. Thranduil is very set in his ways, we can clearly see, and given his nature it would take some time for his viewpoint to be swayed, even by his son, so I think it would have been better for the conflict to have begun in DoS, if it will even occur at all.

I think The Battle of the Five Armies is going to be EPIC. After the disappointment that was Mockingjay (the only other movie this past month I was really looking forward to) I'm really looking forward to this! I don't think it should be better than Return of the King, but it looks like it's going to be, at least visually. Every trailer and TV spot for this has gotten me hyped to the max!!

i am seeing this tomorrow, and am keenly looking forward to this. I had a feeling this film may not capture as much audience attention as the previous efforts.

i'd like for it to be quite successful.

I've certainly enjoyed my visit back to middle earth!.

I have to agree unfortunately. Whilst I enjoyed the film, it felt like an over-extended third act. The first 15 minutes really felt like
[Show spoiler]they belonged at the end of The Desolation of Smaug considering the length of the sequence. Would've made much more sense to end the second film there.
As a third act to the first two films its enjoyable, but it's definitely not really standing strong on its own in my opinion.

Viewed it in IMAX 3D. Might revisited the film in IMAX 3D HFR for the effect, but I'm not sure wether I'll do so yet.

Agreed, Smaug ruined all excitement I had for the next film and I really enjoyed the first hobbit film despite the complaints. Seriously, Smaug sucked.

Agreed, unfortunately.
Saw it yesterday in HFR 3D, and I'm really disappointed. There just wasn't much in the way of emotional payoff I felt. This film was basically a lot of marching and getting ready for war, a lot of fighting... a lot MORE fighting, a lot of totally unnecessary humour involving the Alfrid character that just falls flat on its face and doesn't add ANYTHING to the film. It's just there to pad out the running time I felt. And aside from that, there really wasn't much else of anything.
I do respect the technical prowess of these films, but this one was, like I felt Return of the King was, overkill. Too much action that I just couldn't get invested in that just looked too fake at times. Some of it also just looked silly
[Show spoiler] (like the sequence where Legolas is using falling rocks as a flight of stairs, seriously, that was so cringe worthy...)
. Where the previous Hobbit films had warmth and dialogue that made them feel fairy tale-like and magical, like Biblo's encounters with Smaug and Gollum and the three trolls, this film really didn't have anything like that I felt. I'm trying to remember specific things about the entire five army battle, but all I see is a big blur where, at times, every character gets to shine a little and take down a few dozen orcs each, but really, this didn't hit me at all as hard as I had hoped for, emotionally. The deaths of important characters didn't really get to me at all, which they did in the previous trilogy. This all feels very superficial.
This film truly shows that Peter Jackson just went all megalomanical and proved that he's not much better than George Lucas and his Star Wars prequels, and that The Hobbit really should have been one single 3-3½ hour film.
I'm feeling generous when giving this a 5/10 (or a weak 3/5 if you will). I really expected a lot more

Based on everything I've seen so far (until I see TBo5A for myself), I've basically resigned myself to seeing an inferior version of the film until the extended edition comes along.

The writing and staging, yeah...but the dragon design and f/x were aces.
