You gotta remember something, my friend. There are many people out there associated with books and movies, who have a negative reaction to Tollkien because he was a RC.

Amazingly Ive never read the hobbit. I have no idea what happens in it, which is kind of cool. The set pic looks good though.

I think the notion of good and evil is pretty simple in LOTR. Yeah, some characters are redeemed etc. but it's mostly pretty basic. Orcs=pure evil etc.

I don't see that as a knock. Black and white distinctions between good and evil are incredibly prevalent in literature, film etc. People enjoy that more than a lot of morally ambiguous characters etc. it seems.

True, and that was despite his attempt to keep obvious references to religion out of LotR. But after selling a couple hundred of million copies of LotR and The Hobbit (and the continued interest in his work as is evident in this thread), it appears as though he had the last laugh.

If you've seen Lord of the Rings, then there were flashbacks to events that occur in The Hobbit.

Even some of the good guys in The Hobbit have flaws.
[Show spoiler]Thorin's greed for instance.

Why? No one had a problem with C.S. Lewis who's books had blatant Christian themes in them...(personally I think the idea that God is just a big cuddly lion would be awesome!)

Well, they do confront Frodo after the Black Rider incident, and they make the same choice as they do in the book, just at a different moment.

I didn't like those books for just that reason personally. Just didn't appeal to me as an atheist.

Just rip the final chapter out. Before that it's just simply borrowing aspects of one piece of fiction in another.

True that. There are probably other examples as well. Thorin was the first one that came to mind.

I wasn't saying they're aren't any examples of morally amibiguous characters in the saga.

Just that the overall, main story is a simple, classic good vs. evil tale. And I love it, so that's not a knock. But it's pretty simple that Sauron and the Orcs are evil, the fellowship are good. Of course individual characters have a bit more moral ground.

Sauron's not that bad, he just hung out with the wrong crowd when he was younger. If he would've just stayed away from Melkor...

If you guys are arguing about the simplicity of LotR, I can't wait to hear what you have to say about this, given that The Hobbit was originally intended for children.

I do agree that for the most part, the good vs. evil is pretty cut & dried in LOTR, but the story,(especially the books), are very complex. I have read LOTR at least once a year since I was about 15 or so,(I'm 40), and still find things I've either not noticed, or forgot.
The Hobbit on the other hand is nowhere near as daunting, but still an awesome story!

Agreed. The LotR is definitely very complex, but in a good way. I am excited to reread both of these again soon.
