Ian Holm is playing older Bilbo again, and it would make sense that Bilbo would be telling his story to Frodo, and Frodo being amazed and in a childlike wonderment on the adventures his uncle had. It fits perfectly in that context and that's what Peter Jackson is going for. It's not like their forcing Frodo into the journey or something like that.
Not disappointed at all.

My main interest is seeing these films fit as perfectly as possible with the LOTR films. I'm not at all sensitive to changes from source material personally. I treat books and movies as separate entities and don't care if a movie changes a lot as long as it's still a great movie in its own right.

Tolkien was able to recognize that even though some movie industry scriptwriters are not.

Part of me would like to see the Hobbit rewritten in the style and tone of LOTR. From a movie standpoint, I think it makes sense for the Hobbit movie to match the tone of the LOTR movies.
Darken may have not been a complete description, but I think it is suffice to say that LOTR is a much darker story than The Hobbit. The fact remains that Tolkien did edit Riddles in the Dark to change The Ring into something more sinister. I think the success of The Hobbit forced Tolkien to complete the idea of middle earth, and that is how we ended up with LOTR and The Silmarillion. While no one can be sure, I have a feeling that if The Hobbit were written after LOTR, it would have been much longer and much more detailed than its current iteration. Of course, if The Hobbit had never been written, there would probably be no LOTR.

Aye! There goes my brain again!

I agree with you that if the Hobbit had been written after LOTR, it would be much more like LOTR.

IIRC The Silmarillion was in various stages of development that started even before he wrote The Hobbit. And that the Hobbit wasn't originally intended to be a part of his mythological landscape

Isn't it true that the Salmarillion was written with never the intention of it being published? Hence, why it begins as such a tough read for the first 1/2 of the book, and then becomes a good bit easier to "digest."

No, Tolkien wanted it published with LOTR. In the Foreword to LOTR Tolkien makes mention of it, in the first paragraph, then he says that "When those whose advice and opinion I sought corrected little hope to no hope, I went back to the sequel".

IIRC The Silmarillion is mentioned in the Appendices after ROTK. Tolkien did rewriting and changes to the Silmarillion, over the years, but never really finished it. His son has books published with later versions of the Silmarillion than the one he chose to publish.

Well, at least they found a way of making each of the dwarfs look distinctively different.

Cool picture and can't wait for more. Has Jackson said any thing about filming extended versions for these films? Or is it not really needed as we are getting 2 movies from 1 book that chances are already over 2 hours each.

I'd guess there won't be an extended edition for just that reason.

And if there is I'd think it would be less substantial than the LOTR EEs and more a way to milk the franchise with multiple DVD/BR releases than to please fans of the book etc.

OK yeah that's what I though as both movies put together will be over 4 hours I'm guessing and that's good for just a one book adaption.

Interesting. So it appears that they will make each dwarf look unique - which is actually preferred for keeping tracking of who is who in the film. I always struggle with war films where everyone looks the same and I'm supposed to remember each character's unique story.

That does somewhat contradict how they were portrayed in LOTR, however. They all looked pretty much the same. Same with every race - they only vary slightly amoung themselves.

I think they look terrible, like cartoon characters. But it may just be the photoshopping.

I think the one on the left with the starfish mohawk looks silly as hell. Other than that, I think it looks great.

There is quite a cartoonish look to them, not sure if that's CG effects on their faces or photoshop work. I hope they are not making this more kid friendly.
