Looking forward to this one and looks like we'll get more with a third movie. The trailer for this was great and it feels just like it fits in with the other LOTR movies. The only complaint I have is that some of the dwarves facial makeup looks a little on the fake side. Maybe this will look better when the actual movie comes out. I haven't watched the EE yet so there will likely be a several day marathon this fall.

I don't quite get it though, did they realize they shot too much stuff for 2 three hour movies or simply want to make 3 two hour movies instead?
Like instead of releasing 2 movies in theaters and then releasing Extended Editions with alot of extra footage they figure they'll put all the footage they have in 3? Or are they actually going BACK to shoot an entirely new movie? |

Can't believe they're shooting the third movie and the first isn't out until December. Haha.
I'm just glad it's coming. I grew up with the LOTR trilogy... so many fond memories. I can't wait for The Hobbit films. I hope they're as successful as LOTR. |

Not that I've had much luck in this thread guessing release dates (
![]() 11th July 2007 - Harry Potter 5 18th July 2008 - The Dark Knight 15th July 2009 - Harry Potter 6 16th July 2010 - Inception 15th July 2011 - Harry Potter 8 20th July 2012 - The Dark Knight Rises 12th July 2013 - Pacific Rim With the exception of Potters 5 and 6 they've all been released on the mid-Friday in July - and, obviously, all have done very, very well for Warners, hitting just as schools worldwide break-up and ensuring a long run which will be as important for The Hobbit and its family appeal as it was for Harry Potter (though it's odd that Pacific Rim gets this slot next year and not Man of Steel which is June 14th, but I guess Pacific Rim started filming later and needs a lot of post-production). So assuming they'll go for a Friday as they have for most I would guess that we'll see The Hobbit 3 on 18th July 2014. There's the chance we may get it on 11th July instead but I think that's slightly too early to hit the family crowds. X-Men: First Class 2 already has the 18th pencilled but I think they may move if Warners want it (after all, as great as X-Men: First Class was, even if Warners go for 11th July it'll still end up getting trounced by The Hobbit if it opens a week later) After my last guess I wouldn't write this in your diaries just yet though. ![]() Last edited by Buddy Ackerman; 07-31-2012 at 10:34 AM. |

They have already said that the title for the second film is There And Back Again, so Film Two needs to see the events of The Lonely Mountain wrapped up. I am extremely hesistant to think that Jackson can stretch out the events of A Warm Welcome (chapter 10) to The last Stage (chapter 19) over two feature films! We know that An Unexpected Journey will end with 'Barrels...' (chapter 9) so how exactly are they going to pace it so Film 3 ends with the return journey?
"You said sitting on the doorstep and thinking would be my job, so that is what i am doing!" Said Bilbo. Besides, what would be the natural break point for Film Two if it wasn't going to include [Show spoiler] If it turns out that Film Three will use the title There And Back again, i vote for Film Two to be called The Hobbit - Return Of The Shadow. ![]() Last edited by TheWildWhelk; 07-31-2012 at 08:58 AM. |

The press release now lists the second film as untitled so it looks like There and Back Again will be the title of the third film (as it concludes Bilbo's adventures) and a new title will be attached to the middle film.
At the moment the rumoured titles are 'Riddles in the Dark' and 'The Desolation of Smaug'. I don't love either but I much prefer The Desolation of Smaug. I can see them using Riddles in the Dark to reference [Show spoiler] but come on, we all know where that title fits and it's not there!Nothing's certain about the breaks in the films yet, though theonering say (and they have good sources in the production) that the ending of An Unexpected Journey will change now, which makes sense if pacing the story out over three films. Personally I always thought the first film should end in Mirkwood as it gives us a nice cliffhanger [Show spoiler] and gives Bilbo a nice place to end his arc for that film as he [Show spoiler] I've read some fans want it to end at the edge of Mirkwood before they go in but I don't think spending the final twenty minutes in Beorn's house would be a rousing conclusion, nor would an ending of the company looking at an ominous wood be a satisfying cliffhanger if you didn't know the story. So in my mind the story would break up as follows: An Unexpected Journey - [Show spoiler] Film Two - [Show spoiler] .There and Back Again - [Show spoiler] .The White Council stuff I would expect to be woven throughout, with Gandalf constantly investigating and building up to the attack on Dol Guldur in There and Back Again. I think it would fit better in film two as part of the climax but then you'd have none of that plot left for the third which may seem odd (unless you see [Show spoiler] ). But then Gandalf is needed at the Battle of Five Armies so either the end of film two or the start of There and Back Again for Dol Guldur.

[Show spoiler] is an interesting and logical conclusion. It means that Film Two will concentrate on the events of the Appendices rather than Bilbo and company, leaving the ending of Film Three to match the book. Intruiging!

No, it was confirmed as soon as the third film was announced that it'd be out in Summer 2014.
