Amazing New Merchandise For THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY Revealed

Weta have unveiled their first wave of merchandise for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and it not only includes some great statues and artwork, but also replicas of some of the most iconic maps and weapons which will be used in the film. You can even get your hands on Gollum's "Precious"!

As always with Weta, those are incredible but, thankfully, I can't afford all of them (much to my girlfriend's delgiht as she still has to put up with their Orthanc and Bag End models in the living rsoom).

I think I may be able to persuade her to allow me to get Thorin's map at least. It's such an iconic piece of artwork from the book, it'd be wonderul to have a Weta version framed and up in the house.

It would be .... if it was an exact copy of the map in the book. However, it's not. Compare and contrast:

The Weta version:

The original:

http://wordsathome2.files.wordpress....thrors-map.jpg

At a quick glance they appear the same, but look closely, particularly at the dragons and the Lonely Mountain.

Basically, the Weta version appears to have been drawn from scratch and 'tarted up'.

No doubt the other maps are also tarted up and re-drawn (I haven't checked).

That's why I mentioned having a Weta 'version' of it. I don't mind the 'tarting up', not at all. I know you're not keen on the films, especially the differences from the books, but I love the work that Weta do, they are an incredibly talented bunch and their adaptations and interpretations of Tolkein's world, to me, produce staggering results.

In short, I don't mind the differences

Fair enough - I own a poster reproduction of the original map and have looked at it very many times over the years, hence why I noticed the differences.

Love these two posters !

The dwarfs don't look like a bunch of retards compared with the previous ''wallace and grommit'' poster.

And that poster with Elrond, Gandalf, Saruman and Galdriel !!!! so good to see these actors and characters again

The "Ring Box" is signed by Jens Hansen.

Didn't Dominic call himself Hans Jensen in the prank pulled on Elijah Wood on the ROTK EE Easter Eggs?

I hope that lays to rest the goblin controversy. Looks like they're really close to the Fellowship goblins. I wonder if the big goblin with the whitish face is the Great Goblin?

Looks like The Noble Collection will have a significantly ($39 vs $449 @ Weta) cheaper version of Bilbo Baggin’s Deed of Contract.

Per TORn

Spoilers for size...

[Show spoiler]

Now, obviously the $449 one from Weta, being a replica is of much nicer quality -- but considering this thing would just sit on my bookshelf for most of it's time -- I think I'll go this route (then again I don't think the wife was ever going to let me get the weta replica...)

You would think at that price each one is personally written by somebody instead of it being printed.

The maps look good for the most part, but there are a few odd points. For example, the maps of the Shire and Eastfarthing label Bamfurlong as though it is a major feature of the Shire (it gets the same billing as "Buckland"), when it is merely Farmer Maggot's property. Perhaps Maggot makes an appearance in the Hobbit movie, although he wasn't mentioned in the story. Regardless, his farm "probably" wouldn't have been identified on a map.

Also, concerning Thror's map, the thing that stood out on the Weta map when I looked at it wasn't so much the dragon, but the fact that the door is drawn at the wrong location. Then I realized the artist rotated the mountain by 45 degrees, but still left the compass directions the same as on the original map.

Since they have maps of The Shire and virtually copied Tolkien's map of the Lonely Mountain, I'm surprised that they didn't include his (or a similar) map of Wilderland, which involves most of the story.

Interesting - again almost a carbon copy of Tolkien's map, but extended south to show Dol Guldur, which is not labeled as such, but instead is identified as Amon Lanc (its original name). Note also (among other things) that Lothlorien, the Silverlode, and Moria are on the map, although they are not labeled. I also find this strange, since they will apparently be in the film and were also in the LotR films.

Thumbs up Extended Edition (Q4) 2013!

.

From the thedigitalbits-

"...officially confirmed here for the first time – Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition (Q4). One suspects a theatrical cut will be released earlier in 2013, following the home video release pattern of the previous Lord of the Rings films. And it’s reasonable to suspect that a Blu-ray 3D version will be forthcoming as well."
