Empire's Ultimate Hobbit : The Unexpected Journey issue – complete with five 3D lenticular covers to collect – arrives on shelves tomorrow, Thursday October 24, and with it a whole host of Hobbit exclusives. Not least of which is the run time for Peter Jackson's upcoming film. Those who have been fearing that the change from two films to three would result in less Bombur for your buck, fear no more: it's still an epic length.

“It’s looking like it’s going to be about ten minutes shorter than Fellowship was," explains Jackson. "So it’s going to be officially our shortest Middle-earth yet. I mean, Fellowship was just under three hours and this is about 2 hours 40 minutes at the moment.”

The "at the moment" refers to the fact that the credits hadn't yet been added and not all effects shots finalised when we spoke to Jackson, but it's going to be close.

Finally, if you're curious about what to expect from all 160-odd minutes of Hobbity goodness, take a look at the extended scroll poster, the Lego sets and the full trailer below. Then again, you could just read Tolkien's book and make an educated guess.

As this interview would have been a few weeks ago at the latest to make it to print then the 170 minute update from last week is almost certainly accurate.

Warners has been telling UK cinemas that it's 170 minutes long as recently as yesterday.

I know these are only still picture scans, but if they are indicator, it looks as though Gollum is more detailed, and Galadriel has a slightly different look (more "Elvish"?) than their corresponding LotR characters.

[Show spoiler] Well, I noticed that but refrained from saying anything so as not to cast a negative taint to the movie while still in production. But, I would think that the phial has nothing to do with The Hobbit story, because although I don't recall seeing a date for the creation of the phial, Galadriel presumably drew the water from her fountain to give it as a gift to Frodo 60 years later. The significance of the phial in LotR was both symbolic and also as a device to tie the Quest of the Ring with the major historical events of Middle-earth in the First and Second Ages. Also, one might imagine that Galadriel's power as the last of the Great among the High Elves of Middle-earth, along with the power of the Elven ring would trump any additional advantage that the phial might offer her - or say, Elrond or Gandalf.

Perhaps (I hope) it is not in the movie at all, and is merely a promotional gimmick to get people to associate this movie with their experience of the Lord of the Rings movies?

Gollum definitely got more detail added, which you can especially see in his skin which looks more worn. And those eyes are haunting. Great work by Weta.

But they're not just an adaptation of the book - they have had segments of the Appendices from The Lord of the Rings added to the story (along with more of Jackson's additional nonsense of course).

And if Gandalf disappeared for most of the movie as much as he does in just the original book, we'd probably just think that McKellen was snubbing the sequels and only making a cameo.

Peter Jackson Reveals A Few Details About The Hobbit

Just yesterday we heard from Peter Jackson himself regarding the possible runtime of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first film in his trilogy based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. Today, thanks to Comic Book Movie via Empire Magazine, we have more info from the man himself regarding certain details about the films, including where we will be seeing certain characters and events.

The first tidbit is regarding Smaug (Voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch), the evil dragon that has taken over the Dwarves’ home. Jackson reveals that we will indeed be seeing him in the first film, making a “fleeting appearance” in the prologue, and that he’ll “remain as liquid tongued as the book’s memorable villain (he is a character not a monster).”

The next bit of info regards the Mirkwood spider scenes, which Jackson says have been moved to film two, adding that “the creepy arachnids will speak, but only as a ‘psychic communication’, which only Bilbo can hear.”

That makes sense when you think about it. Having three films to work with would allow you to move a scene that takes place in the middle of the book into film two. Back when it was just two films, I imagined this was going to be the climax of the first film, but now it will be interesting to see where it is placed in The Desolation of Smaug.

Finally, we’ve learned that scenes involving the Necromancer (also to be played by Cumberbatch) will be in the second film. Sylvester McCoy, who plays Radagst, mentioned a scene “where the wizards are together, battling not each other but some other evil.” Fans of the novel will recall that the Necromancer doesn’t actually appear in it, which will make it rather interesting to see how Jackson and his crew incorporate him into the story.

Be sure to check back for the latest news on The Hobbit as we get closer and closer to the release of the first part of the trilogy.

ARMITAGE: "Yeah, he’s brilliant. He knows Pete’s vision, he has a great rapport with him and the other actors. And because he’s also been in the film, he totally understands the process that we’re going through. We did some fighting, which was basically part of a prologue of when the dwarves take the gates of Moria, and it was a great day walking onto second unit, and he had Orcs on this mound and he was rallying them to start this battle cry, and wind machines going, and blood everywhere. It was a really good day. It’s great to walk into that energy, and he really creates great energy on set. The only difficulty is that Pete wants to direct both units, so you have to wait for Pete’s approval, which is amazing, ’cause he will not let a single shot go. He wants to see everything. I think I put a shield through my lip and I smashed the shield in and had a mouthful of blood and this big, huge broken lip, and he said, “Okay, can you just try another one now?” I’m like, “Yeah, okay”, with this big mouthful of blood. But it looks great on the shot, because I’ve got this sort of bleeding teeth and it’s dripping out of my face. Tami Lane will get a big applause for that."
