I'm gonna have to see it twice because my partner wants to see it at the Crawley Cineworld Lie-Max and I want to watch it in HFR 3D. Was hoping the Crawley Lie-Max would be HFR but according to this email that may now not be the case. Won't know until maybe only 2 days before it's released. Nice way to secure the fans who want to see HFR3D Cineworld.
![]() Dear Mr Mumford, Thank you for contacting Cineworld. In regards to your enquiry, we have received a limited number of versions of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ in the 48fps format and as such not all screens (including IMAX) within our Cinemas will be able to have a copy upon release. Currently the decision has not been made as to which Cinemas will have this for the initial launch as we are still in discussions with the films distributors. We currently run updates on the website every Tuesday afternoon for film times for the next 7 to 9 days and supply any new information for future date. I would recommend checking the website or calling us at Customer Services on the number below on the 11th of December for the most up to date information regarding this launch. I do hope this is of help to you and should you have any further queries please feel free to contact our Customer Services on 0844 815 7747. Kind regards Scott Hardie Customer Services |

So can Blu-Ray 3D do more than 24p or 30p? Is this something I have no choice but to go to a cinema to see if I want to watch it in its intended format for the foreseeable future?

All 240Hz HDTVs should be able to handle 48p content. HDMI standard doesn't include a 48p resolution, but it does support 60p, so it should be more than capable. And the current Blu-ray spec also does not include 48p resolution. Blu-ray would be biggest challenge since you would require roughly twice the storage to do the same length of movie. Obviously, a 3-4 hour film is already pushing the capabilities of the format, so the only choice would be to either split the film into two parts (like the DVD) or increase the size of the disc. The later is available, its just a matter of implementing the change. |

The "soap opera" or "documentary" look is being used by folks to describe the amount of clarity and just the general look of the 48fps presentation of the Hobbit.
You know, how "soap operas" and documentaries look more "realistic" (for lack of a better term) without all the "grain" and "fluff" you see in film. |

I wonder if people with LEDs accustomed to the "TrueMotion" effect will be more receptive to the 48 fps. For my part, I own a Samsung LCD and put the dejudder halfway so it's not too "soap opera" looking, but high enough to make think that 24 fps is too stuttery.

It seems like this 48fps + 3D is an experience, but sounds like an inconsistent mish-mosh experience. The main factor I enjoy when watching a film is consistency with how things look, the same goes for when I wake up in the morning and open my eyes until I go to bed. I don't want to walk around all day and see things in an inconsistent way which could resemble the experience of someone with an eye disorder/ailment.
What is the benefit of seeing something super crisp and clear and with 3D effects when merged with a soap opera look, costumes/makeup/sets being more obvious, green screen/CGI being more obvious? Last edited by toddly6666; 12-05-2012 at 04:02 PM. |
