Very glad to hear that we're getting an Extended Edition! All part of the tradition for these films, though there was a chance that the split into a trilogy would render these versions the 'extended' editions. Glad that's not the case, especially as I've read that my favourite shot of the trailers isn't in the film -
[Show spoiler] . A tiny moment I'm sure but I loved that image so I hope it makes the cut.

If An Unexpected Journey doesn't miss anything out of the book, then what is to be expected to be included in the Extended release? Having to 'skip stuff out' is something Jackson doesn't need to do with this adaptation!
So. Do i want to see extended editions of a book already expanded beyond it's original narrative? No. Do i want to see all of the special features on the BD when it comes? Yes. ![]() Looks like i'll be following the masses and buying the Extended Editions then, because Jackson isn't going to put all the extra's on the theatrical BD release, is he? |

Hell no!!!
I ain't missing it in theatres even if it's not the extended editions. I want to be able to say "oh, I don't remember that scene in the theatrical. Now [insert applicable scene here] makes more sense" when I watch the EE. |

I realise this is a blu-ray forum where living like a shut-in and only ever watching films at home appeals to some posters (that doesn't apply to everyone of course) but missing out on the big screen experience for films like this is beyond me. ![]() I gotta see these films on the big screen. Plus, I've been waiting ten years for The Hobbit, no wait...scratch that, my whole life to see a live-action adaption of The Hobbit on the big screen. Next Friday can't get here soon enough!!! And despite the mixed reviews on the 3D 48 FPS, I want to see and judge it for myself, as it's something I can't experience in my own home right now. I also want the experience of seeing these films to be as fresh as possible. Waiting another two years for extended editions severely runs the risk of having images and discussions online spoil any surprises left that these films still might hold for me. Sure, I've read the book dozens of times and know the story like the back of my hand, but this expanded journey and Peter Jackson's visualization of it is something I want to experience without having these things spoiled for myself, no matter how small or inconsequential. With the exception of the very first trailer, I've managed to resist viewing all the trailers and footage that have been hitting the internet over the last several months. I seriously doubt I could manage to keep that up for another two years ![]() I've already purchased my ticket and will be seeing The Hobbit first thing Friday morning at 10am, on what will probably be the first of multiple viewings of this film at the cinema ![]() |

Yeah, plus you never know when your last day is, so go see them! If you don't want to double dip on the home video releases, just don't double dip.

So the people who have read the books really think there is enough material to get 3 movies with about another hour or so of extended scenes

Yes, easily. Of course, it depends on what material, and the manner in which he portrays it, but what I've seen so far looks good.

Tolkien's writings on Middle-Earth are quite vast beyond the pages of LOTR and THE HOBBIT. There is a shit tonne more than most people realize.

My only concern is the pacing of the individual films, and its something I feel An Unexpected Journey will suffer from most (with casual audiences anyway, I'm sure knowing what happens next will help for fans). I worry they may feel slight compare to the more full story arcs of the LOTR films. When viewed all together though they should make a hell of a story. |

There are at least two that we know of that did not make it into the film. - Bilbo at the Hobbiton fish market. - Bilbo viewing the 'Shards of Narsil'. Maybe we will end up with over an hour of Hobbiton at the beginning of the EE. ![]() .

The Hobbit is a pretty sparse book. If it had been written in the more descriptive and detailed style of The Lord of the Rings, it would most definitely have been a much larger novel. Combine that with the fact that we're going to be getting a lot of material concerning the dwarves (from the Appendices) and the White Council's preparations against the Necromancer, and I'm fine with PJ making a trilogy out of The Hobbit.
I always viewed The Hobbit as it exists within the larger scope of Tolkien's writings - as Bilbo's account of his adventures, "There and Back Again: A Hobbit's Tale". What we're getting with these films is a broader sweeping account of the events in Middle Earth during that period - the events of the mission to reclaim Erebor as they may have been set down by someone like Elrond or Galadriel, as opposed to Bilbo. For me, it's a fresh and exciting perspective on a story I know well. It may not be what every viewer wants, but it's certainly something I can't wait for. ![]() Last edited by Aragorn the Elfstone; 12-09-2012 at 11:03 PM. |
