The LOTR parts 1-3 would have sounded stupid . Can't wait to see the trailer. Making two movies will be better in the long run, but for right now it's hard to imagine having to wait two more years before the second part is released. Well, if this does well they'll probably make the Silmarillion too. That would be awesome. I can't imagine how that would look. The battle scenes and Sauron being sucked into the abyss. Awesome!
No one has the film rights to The Silmarillion, and Christopher Tolkien has been adamant that he will not let them go...

I will go ahead and predict that they just might end the first movie with a good sized battle at 'Dol Guldur'.

.

Dol Guldur should be after Smaug and the Hobbit novel. I think they end with Smaug in the first film. But that leaves the Battle of the Five Armies and Dol Guldur in the second.....either way one of the films will be heavily weighted it looks like.

Apparently they altered the text later. That is mentioned here:

"The actual budget for the first film will be $250 million. The second part of The Hobbit will also cost $250 million. So $500 million is actually the cost for TWO movies. The $500 million number was reported by Entertainment Weekly (which has since taken the story down), the industry newsletter Hollywood Wiretap and MTV."

Getting to Rivendelll in LOTR takes so much longer than it does in The Hobbit. Then there is the timing descrepancy between the three trolls incident between the Hobbit and LOTR.

I have to think that PJ will have The Prancing Pony and Weathertop in The Hobbit movie to stretch that part out a bit. Otherwise fans of the LOTR movies are going to wonder why they were left out.

Part of the reason all 3 LotR films were so cheap was due to the fact that all 3 were filmed at the same time.

well they're filming these at the same time so I'm thinking it's because these 2 have had so many problems before getting Green Lit and stuff during filming. Plus they're shooting in England too. I believe it's England. So maybe Christopher Lee might still be in it.

The only filming taking place in England are selected scenes featuring Christopher Lee as Saruman, as he is extremely old and not willing to travel to New Zealand for the shoot. Good on him, and good for Peter Jackson aquiescing to his request.

Also have to take into account inflation. LotR was filmed around a decade ago.

I might not be a fan of these movies and I was having fun a few posts back but these films are NOT CHEAP looking!

Have fun with your countdown here. I'm sure fans will be pleased with the outcome of this two parter!

From the look on Gandalf's face, it seems that Saruman's comment in the Fellowship of the Ring movie about the halflings' leaf clouding his mind may be true.

After re-reading The Hobbit i was struck how Gandalf didn't really have much of a plan in mind after he had gotten Bilbo and the dwarves togther to deal with the situation at the Lonely Mountain. He basically pointed them in the right direction whilst looking at dealing with other matters with the Necromancer. What did he think that Thorin and Co would do to deal with Smaug? The best that could happen was that some treasure would have been stolen, the worst that Smaug would have been rattled enough to trash Laketown. Very odd that Gandalf didn't seem to have thought things through...

Ref: Empire Pics

From the Empire pics, it looks like Gandalf is going to look a lot younger than the cover sugggests. They must have broken out some "Just for Men" because that gray is fading away!

And Martin Freeman is owning the Bilbo look. Is it 2012 yet?

I guess they want to make the point that Gandalf is many years younger in this movie. However, what is 50 years out of several thousand?

You he no idea what stress can do to a wizard when he's dealing with a band of dwarves on a mission and then he runs into the problem of the Necromancer, who he correctly suspects is Sauron, in the interim.

I always got the impression that he'd hoped to re-join them by the time they reached Smaug, but got tied up dealing with the Necromancer and was delayed.
