I don't recall ever reading anything about that.
A few things:

First, that's Bifur, not Bofur. (Bofur is played by James Nesbitt - dwarf in the middle with the large axe/mattock over his shoulder).

Secondly - the piece of metal in Bifur's forehead was NOT mentioned in the book and is bloody ridiculous. A typical Peter Jackson crap 'enhancement'.

Also, why are their beards obviously trimmed and shaved? Dwarves NEVER cut their beards ..........

Well, I think a lot of what we are seeing is PJ trying to close the gaps. Look, we know that dwarves are very fond of jewels and precious metals, so its not inconceivable that they would also be fond of nice clothes.

Also, the "elvish" features of Fili and Kili could PJ trying to show that they are much younger than their travel companions. I mean, dwarves aren't born with beards, so at some point they have to go through - for lack of a better term - puberity. Maybe Fili and Kili haven't?

Another possible explanation is that we are seeing some spoilers here. For instance:
[Show spoiler]We know that Bifur survives the Battle of the Five Armies, but it is conceivable that he was injured during the battle. Maybe we are seeing that injury? Remember, films aren't filmed in chronological order.

And - this may be a bit more reaching - maybe Kili and Fili look like Elves because they are trying to? Maybe they want to blend in with the Elves for some tactical reason?

I think they are born with beards.

Also, some of them are dwarven royalty--I think they'd be too pompous to wear less than GQ, even if they were going to have to get dirty. At least I'd say Thorin was, and I doubt he was alone in that paradigm.

@DerrenBrown Off to watch some Ian Holm and Christopher Lee being filmed for The Hobbit. HOW EXCITING!
They also say that Elijah Wood may be traveling back to the UK as well for some additional shooting during the break.

Don't bother. From the other thread he's a person who just loves Tolkien's books to death and thinks it's blasphemous for Jackson to change anything.

Ehh...If this was a production still I could buy that. But this is a promo image, I don't think they would show a significant injury like that in a promo image.

I don't think they have filmed that section yet either.

Interesting, as it appears that he's got Orcrist in that picture; which further raises the question just when in the story are these images from (guess the costume and make-up portions really).
