I really agree with this. And, come on, isn't he supposed to be older than Balin, who looks very old (and not just in the beard)? I love PJ to death, but he does have a penchant for hiring younger actors than I've always pictured. Like Stuart Townsend, the narrow escape we had for Aragorn. Only, I'm sure this time he won't be changing his mind.

I'm thinking Alan Lee and John Howe's illustrations were not the overall vision for these dwarf looks.

ToRN has the exclusive Thorin reveal

Quote:
As a young Dwarf prince, Thorin witnessed the destruction and terror wrought when a great fire-breathing Dragon attacked the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. After slaughtering many of Thorin’s kin, the great serpent, Smaug, entered The Lonely Mountain and took possession of its vast store of gold and jewels. No-one came to the aid of the surviving Dwarves, and thus, a once proud and noble race was forced into exile. Through long years of hardship, Thorin grew to be a strong and fearless fighter and revered leader. In his heart a fierce desire grew; a desire to reclaim his homeland and destroy the beast that had brought such misery upon his people. So when fate offers him an unusual ally, he seizes the chance for revenge.

And yes, they even have wallpaper size prints on their website. Enjoy.

I think he looks fine. Age of characters is pretty inconsequential to me.

They just want the lead dwarf to be decent looking for movie audience.

Similar, the dwarves look so different as they have to if audience are going to keep 13 dwarves names straight. In a book the character's name is listed everytime they speak, in a movie you can't do that so you need the appearances to be reasonably unique and distinctive from one another.

He looks too human to me. He just doesn't have that 'dwarvish' look like Gimli, and the other dwarves at the Council of Elrond did.

True. But we only saw a handful of Dwarves in LOTR (Gmili and those with him,and the Dwarven kings in the prologue) so I don't really feel that was representative of what all Dwarves have to look like.

Started reading The Hobbit last night. I'm on the journey to read the LOTR books. So excited! I've only watched the movies, which are INCREDIBLE.

The HD pics are infinitely better than anything we had seen previously. Where as the smaller images looked overly photochopped, you can now see all the detail. I'm appreciating the characters even more.

It's going to take some time to get used to the appearance of the movie dwarves. Definitely not what I was expecting. Were dwarves big fans of motorcycle gangs and S & M? What's with the dwarf with the starfish head? Was recreational sculptoral hairdressing one of their pastimes?

Quite. These dwarves bear no resemblance whatsoever to Tolkien's descriptions.

Still, it's a PJ flick, I didn't expect any better - it'll just end up as a dumbed down action flick.

Well, i do without the internet for just under 2 weeks and we get a slew of Hobbit information and images! Just chuck in my 2 cents and say that most of the dwarves look excellent, but PJ has dropped the ball bigtime with Thorin. He simply doesn't look stocky or old enough. Bear in mind the rumour that Del Toro was considering using Brian Blessed (google image him) for the role, and tell me that Jackson hasn't screwed up. That just isn't Thorin in my mind, and i've read the book more times that i can recall.

Any one else get the feeling that the dwarves are going to have as big of a role (if not bigger) as Bilbo?

Thorin is obviously replacing Aragorn as a main character. In that light, it makes some sense not to make him too old. Gandalf is the old, wise character. One film (or in this case, two films) is not big enough for two elders.

Hey! Now I get it, your really Christopher Tolkien and you troll message boards railing against everything PJ does, it makes so much more sense now...
