Well if you are a 'triple header' computer gamer it would be perfect.

They're adding a lot of stuff from history's of Middle Earth and things like that. There is a lot of rumors in how exactly he fits in, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

Oh. So some of these folks may not fit directly into the story, but rather as flashback/flashforwards or short interludes into some important historical elements? That sounds kinda cool, but I hope Jackson doesn't go crazy with it and give us half a movie and half a Middle Earth history lesson.

I don't think you'll find many complaints about
[Show spoiler]Saruman being in the movies since the movies are going to span time after the Hobbit and Saruman WAS part of the White Council which is involved in some good stuff after the Hobbit which Tolkien touched on.

In the book Gandalf leaves for a good while to meet with the White Council (which includes Sauruman) and then they expel the Necromancer (Sauron) from Mirkwood.

It's mentioned in the book but it all takes place "off page." But it looks like that will be a part of the movies on screen. Which makes sense as it helps tie it to LOTR more by having Sauron in these movies as well etc.

Exactly. And it explains a lot of the reason why they're splitting this into two movies. Lots of additional parts that weren't originally part of the book, but are talked about and mentioned. I actually sort of like that they're fleshing it out.

But I thought Sauron was a disembodied spirit for 2,500 years prior to TLotR? He dwells as the "Great Eye" in the land of Mordor, right?

Thats right, his spriit went to Mirkwood and the White Counuil forced him out. Thats when he moved to Mordor and started rebuilding from there. A lot of the side stuff that will be in The Hobbit film will be from Unfinished Tales and the appendices from lotr.

Ah. Did not know that. I've only read The Hobbit once, and never any of the other bits of Middle Earth (aside from LotR) that Tolkien created. So Sauron tried to rebuild in Mirkwood first? Did Gandalf and the others of the White Counsel know this necromancer was Sauron? How did he take physical form, in a possessed body (ala Voldemort hitchhiking on the back of a Hogwarts instructor)? Or was he just a zombie because Ash didn't say the words correctly?
