Stephen Fry heading to ‘Hobbit’ set

With the break in filming (that including filming in the U.K. with Christopher Lee) players in the two-part Hobbit movie are heading back to New Zealand. Word is that Peter Jackson is there now after his surprise stop at Comic-Con and we learned today from his own Twitter (@stephenfry) that Stephen Fry as the Master of Laketown is headed there at well. He tweeted:

"Flying from Cape Town to Jo’burg to Sydney to NZ tomorrow. Will be Tuesday by the time I land in Wellington. Hobbitry beckons."

Luke Evans (Bard the Bowman) told us at the Con that he hasn’t stepped a foot on set yet but is scheduled for training and costume fitting soon. We do know the production is busy with decorating sets and getting costumes and extras ready for the ramp up of another 200 days of filming.

At what part of the book will the first part of the movie end? When Bilbo escapes Gollum and the goblin tunnels?

More likely after the escape from Mirkwood with the camera panning to the Lonely Mountain. Similar to the ending of the Fellowship of the Ring.

I think that's a pretty reasonable guess.

Since it would seem likely that Jackson would want to end it on large action set piece, my guess is that the ending will be right after The Battle of Dol Guldur.

Im in the middle of re-reading the Hobbit (well, it was read to me when I was little) and now I understand why the eagles didnt just fly Frodo to the volcano, because we find out in the Hobbit that, as tough and intimidating as they are, they are a bunch of pussies that dont want to get shot with arrows. The eagles are still cool though, but I like to believe that they have depth now with issues about being far from home and fear of getting shot by arrows, which is why they didnt help out until the end of the return of the king and because they didnt have to worry about too many bad guys after the ring got destroyed!

I am halfway through reading LOTR and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I am not much of a reader so taking in some of the vastness of Tolkiens world and his style has been challenging to say the least.

I was hoping to hold off reading The Hobbit until after I've seen the movies, because that's the way I encountered LOTR. I have also been reading as much as I can on Middle Earth through various websites.

Quick question:
[Show spoiler]Thorin appears to be a bit of an arrogant prick, especially towards Lake-Town after Smaug is dead.
If this is true does the book explain why?
Does the Dwarven ring have any influence on him?

Also:
[Show spoiler]It seems to me that the dwarves get their asses kicked right up until the end of the story, (and even then Thorin seems unwise by rushing in and getting his nephews killed as well as himself). Dwarves are fearsome warriors no? Is the company too few during the journey?
eg.
captured by Trolls
captured by Orcs
captured/trapped by Wargs
captured/trapped by Great spiders
captured by Elves

Granted these are formiddable foe/races, but the dwarves can't seem to get out of any of these messes without Bilbo or Gandalf. Once again the book may explain why this is, if indeed there is anything to it? Maybe I have missed the mark completely I don't know.

Quick question: Thorin never had the ring, so it wouldn't affect him directly, however gold lust and the sense of being wronged and cheated out of his legacy would go a long way towards explaining his actions. And dwarves can be rather unreasonable when treasure is involved.

And yes the dwarves would have failed without Bilbo, that is the point of Gandalf choosing him as their companion. I think that Tolkien liked the idea that even the smallest, unassuming, least likely heroes can do great things, which is even more pronounced in LoTR.

How come Bilbo doesnt get contacted by Sauron whenever he puts on the ring but Frodo gets contacted by Sauron whenever he puts on the ring?

How do you know he doesn't get contacted by sauron in the movie?Don't think PJ will follow the book slavishly, and besides why speculate about flaws beforehand...

Sauron is in a weakened state for a very long time. Sauron doesn't contact Frodo when he has the ring on. He is more easily seen because he is in their world when he has the ring on.

Sorry guys, that was getting a bit too close to politics - especially the responses. I know you're bored awaiting news, but we have to remember the rules. That conversation was on the brink of spinning horribly in the wrong direction.

I apologize, Josh. My jab was an impulsive response to the link posted, which resulted in a lapse in judgement. Sorry, again.

I'm guessing he was too weak during the time the ring was in Bilbo's possesion.
