Benedict Cumberbatch “Crawling About On Belly” For Role Of Smaug

November 2nd, 2011 by Earl | Source: Variety

Variety recently interviewed Benedict Cumberbatch about the iconic roles he’s lately been playing on both TV and cinema, and there’s a small bit where the man talks about his preparation for the role of Smaug.

The relevant excerpt follows:

“I’ll be donning … well, probably not Andy Serkis’ sweaty wet suit … I’m sure they dry clean it.

Playing a reptile is something I don’t believe has been done before. I’ve already started working out, crawling around on my belly whenever I can without alarming people too much.”

Right now, you are the envy of the thread. I would love to be able to visit that site.

I don't know how, but that video got me even more excited about the movies than before.

[Show spoiler]I was laughing at the 3D artwork because I thought it was a joke. I proceeded to put on my 3D glasses to find it worked!

I am more bumped than ever to see this movie. Love how technical the production video gets.

I think Concept Art in 3D is the strangest thing I've seen in filmaking..

It was interesting how they managed to make the 3D work with the mirrors.

In that production video they gave some technical specs.

1. Multiple cameras were used on the original LOTR production 12 years ago in preparation for LOTR 3D transfer!!!!

2. Hobbit is being shot in 5k 48 FPS!!!!

3. OMFG I CANT WAIT!

I believe what he said was that they took some production still photos with a 3D camera that they could put on Blu-ray at some later point. I'm pretty sure they didn't shoot the film in 3D.

Prior to watching that clip, I had no idea they were going to film this movie in 3D.

Thought I heard it as they used multiple cameras for a 3D effect because the technology was not there at the time.

Some of there effects techniques relayed on the lack of 3D. For example when they shot the hobbits next to human characters they would often have actors standard further away from humans but positioned in a way that it looks like they are facing each other. This illusion relayed on the fact that the camera has no depth perception. A 3D camera would have destroyed this illusion. I assume the new picture will use digital layer for this illusion instead to compensate

Unless it's a LOTR footage, voice over and a title card trailer, I wouldn't expect anything until March.

It's pretty damn cool that they do these videos, it helps pass the time waiting for the movie. Oh and those Red Epic cameras are beyond awesome.
