Jackson did like the little moment of Bilbo being pulled out of his paranoia by the fishmonger, so he said I should get his attention when I was finished wrapping the fish.

Knowing I shouldn’t speak, the only options I felt I had were to either wave the wrapped fish in front of Bilbo’s face or give him a friendly tap. I went with the tap, but apparently that didn’t look good. Terry Notary gave me a note saying the movement came across as very modern and Peter came out shortly after and put it a bit more bluntly. “I like that you interrupt him, but the tapping looked bloody stupid.”

That option should be available. Unfortunately, some theaters decide to only screen the 3D version as it at times can mean higher revenue. Even though I love 3D, I think the option should be available for people who either have can't watch 3D (like my dad) or people who just do not like it.

I did.

the new trend I've been noticing at AMC theaters is to show both the 3D version and the 2D version on the same screen - glad they are giving us the patrons the option what version to watch/pay.

That's the way I see it, as a few months ago they were chasing people off the set that came snooping around. And Quint from AICN was invited down to observe the filming and to be able to report about it on his blog...plus Jackson even gave him a small roll in the film too.

And it's obviously a great way to bring more attention to the film that it's story has been around for over 50 years now. Not like Ridly Scott's Prometheus were he has much tighter security do to possible spoilers leaking from a brand new story.

Why Ian McKellen turned down Gandalf

Sir Ian McKellen initially turned down the role of Gandalf in Lord of the Rings because of a clash with his X-Men movie.

Sir Ian McKellen initially said no to Gandalf and only scored the pivotal Lord of the Rings role thanks to a chance meeting in a restaurant.

While it's almost inconceivable to imagine wizened wizard Gandalf being played by anyone else, McKellen says shooting for The Fellowship of the Ring - the first film in Peter Jackson's blockbuster trilogy - clashed with another role he'd signed up for in 2000.

The frank admission comes in a new Lord of the Rings 10-year anniversary special in the December edition of Empire magazine, in which McKellen admits Gandalf was "the role of a lifetime" - but he initially turned down Jackson's offer.

"At the time I was about to play Magneto in the X-Men film in Toronto," he tells Empire. "I was already committed to that ... and it meant I couldn't get to New Zealand in time.

"So I had to tell Peter I could no longer do Gandalf."

It was that exact night that McKellen dined out at a London restaurant next to New Line Cinema executive Bob Shaye.

"He said, 'I hear you're going to be in our movie.' And I said, 'Oh, not anymore.' And he said, 'What's the problem?' And I explained.

"He just said, 'Leave that to me'," said McKellen.

"That was the best thing he ever did for me, beacuse they worked out they could do without me for the first three months ... that is what I remember of the beginning of it - how I very nearly didn't play Gandalf!"



The latest Empire magazine is available on import in New Zealand.

When I read "chance meeting", I immediately thought of an account Tolkien wrote of a "chance meeting" between Gandalf and Thorin that led to the events in The Hobbit.
