That pocket edition is a nice version of The Hobbit. I am requesting History of Middle Earth Vol. 3 as a gift idea for myself for our family gift exchange.

More clues to the "perfecting" process of Tokien's inadequate story.
[Show spoiler]First Radagast, who is in the LOTR book but not in the LOTR movie, makes it into The Hobbit movie, even though Radagast is only mentioned in the book. And it isn't only in the White Council vs The Necromancer portion but in the presence of the dwarves. Next is Ungoliant. Really? The spiders in Mirkwood aren't enough?

Elijah Wood has confirmed that the first trailer for The Hobbit will debut in front of The Adventures of Tintin in the US.

So, would the debut of the trailer be the appropriate time to break this thread between the two films?

Why should we split the thread? The Lord of the Rings thread is not split in 3, why should we split this one?

I wouldn't bother splitting the thread untill the first movie is released.

My vote is to keep a singular thread, because the two movies are based upon one book. I didn't conduct a search, but was there a single Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows thread?

I am agreeing with the others that we should keep it one thread for now.

Works fine for me. Just checking to see what the general consensus was to make this forum work best for all involved. Unless anyone has some major heartburn, we'll keep the thread together for both movies.

Lessee if i can work out how many copies of The Hobbit i have in various formats. Got the paperback edition with colour plates from 1972, hardback edition from 1997 (anniversary edition), my regular reading copy with the black cover from 2000, the graphic novel from David Dixon, yep, that about covers it.

And i implore with humble exhortations all Hobbit fans to get hold of, borrow, purchase or otherwise the BBC radio dramatisation of the book starring Paul Daneman and Heron Carvic. For a number of decades this was my defacto adaptation of the book and it is still quite superb, even to this day.

EDIT: Found the radio dramatisation on Youtube. Seeing as it was first broadcast in 1968, hopefully the Mods won't mind me posting the link. Enjoy!

Thanks for that link. It's always great to read posts on the Hobbit thread by actual Hobbit fans!

I first read The Hobbit at the age of 9 and have read it once a year since then. When the radio dramatisation came along at about the age of 12 i was blown away, as it was exactly how i imagined the book to be. There isn't a single miscast actor in the whole adaptation, with Heron Carvic's Gandalf coming aross as eerily 'Alec Guinness-esque' in his portrayal. From Beorn to Smaug the whole cast is spot on. The sound effects are first-class bearing in mind the age of the production. And most importantly, they seem to have abided by the rule of 'If it ain't broke, dont fix it' i.e there is zero additional embellishment in the narrative in any way, Mr Jackson.

I like what I've heard so far and look forward to hearing the entire production.

I think we created a new thread for Part 2 when Part 1 came out, because all up-coming news would be based sorely on Part 2, and not them both as a whole, I think that's the way we should go with these two

Hammond and Scull's book "The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion" fills that function. There's probably too much material in the book to incorporate all of it into an edition of LOTR.
