I have no problems with that, under the proviso that they are adding whilst not subtracting. Adding shit in whilst taking stuff out of The Hobbit isn't good enough. Something tells me that the encounter with the Trolls will end in something more physical than

maybe I'm forgetting the book, but I thought in terms of your spoiler that

[Show spoiler]Gandalf did some spell thing a ma-jig and created 'sun' rays to appear he did that in the Rankin-Bass animated tv version

I don't think so. But check out that link I posted above as there are some great pics in it.

For instance, in this following one it appears that Jackson has changed the scene of Bilbo finding the One Ring. So it makes you wonder if he will end up changing the one scene in 'Fellowship' also, so they match up better.

Interesting. My concern here is that most of what I've seen so far is DARK. It could just be that a few dark locales have been filmed to date. I hope this is not the representative mood of the movie, because it is not the impression the story that I am left with after reading it. For that reason, my favorite version of the book is the Michael Hague illustrated edition, which I think captures the essence of the story. Strangely enough, my favorite photo in the group is the one with Galadriel (who wasn't even in the story) at Rivendell.

Plus that dreaded TEAL/ORANGE combo seemed to be nonexistent.

Bob:

If you take a gander at some of those pics, it appears that Gandalf is fighting someone in
[Show spoiler]Dol Guldur. And it appears to be...maybe an aged dwarf.

Thrain II possibly???

[Show spoiler] The camera movement is too rapid and the clip too short for me to make anything definite of the scene. I agree that the location is most likely Dol Guldur. If the aged figure that Gandalf seems to be confronting is a dwarf, it is almost certainly Thrain. However, doubts arise because his physical and mental condition at that time would have left him in an extremely weakened condition. Note that in the text Gandalf tells Thorin:

"I tried to save your father, but it was too late. He was witless and wandering, and had forgotten everything except the map and the key."

The most detailed account of this encounter is probably in "The Quest of Erebor" from Unfinished Tales:

Gandalf: "I remembered the unhappy dying Dwarf in the pits of Dol Guldur, and the old map, and the strange key. Until then I had no idea who he was. He had a map that belonged to Durin's Folk in Erebor, and a key that seemed to go with it (though he could not explain it): and he said he possessed a Ring.
Nearly all of his ravings were of that: the last of the seven he would say over and over again. But all these things he might have come by in many ways. He might have been a messenger caught as he fled; or even a thief trapped by a greater thief. He died, before I escaped myself... I understand now that I heard the last ravings of Thrain II Thror's son, though he could not speak his own name nor his son's; and that I had the plan and key of a secret entrance to Erebor."

Therefore, I see no reason to expect violence or enmity between the two, more so because Thrain was dying, so I can not be certain what the scene in the trailer refers to.

Well...
[Show spoiler]if you had been the one to kill someone's father, would you just tell him? Or would you tell this person, who is leading a group of dwarfs and one hobbit on a quest, that his father was pretty much already gone and could not be saved?

On the other side of the coin, if a trusted friend told you he found your father, wouldn't you do all you can to save him? Unless of course, this trusted friend told you he could not be saved?

I'm just guessing, but I can see how Gandalf might spin the truth in order to keep the quest going and Thorin focused. I mean, he did downplay his meeting with Saruman when describing it to the Hobbits.

So it is conceivable, however not directly documented.
