No...I am sure that he could not accurately remember exactly the battle's title, so that gives me hope that he is also inaccurate about 'you know who's' location during that great battle also.

I cannot stress how much of a narrative mistake it would be to have Sauron play any role in The Battle Of The 5 Armies, even if it is as overseer and strategist for the misty mountain forces. Big big mistake! The reason for the battle is simple,
[Show spoiler]it's a massive cash-grab for anyone who is up for it as Smaugh is dead.

No. Elves at Helms Deep i can handle, Sauron somehow involved with the battle is a no-no.

Yeah, I can't imagine Sauron will be in it other than as it pertains to the white council expelling him (The Necromancer) from Mirkwood.

Perhaps they should give Cumberbatch a copy of the book. It would probably be good for him to know what the story is about before he reads his parts.

New Image from THE HOBBIT; Peter Jackson and Co-Writer Philippa Boyens Talk About the Production

A new image from The Hobbit has surfaced online today. It is especially heroic, depicting Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins covered in dirt, wielding a sword Sting, a determined growl on his face. [Update: Commenter Deepak pointed out that Freeman's hand is around Sting, "the blade that glows blue when Orcs are close." My Hobbit knowledge doesn't run that deep, but it sounds noteworthy.] In case you needed any, this is more evidence to me that Freeman is an inspired choice for the part.

Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, and Stephen Fry also star. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens on December 14, 2012 followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again on December 13, 2013. Hit the jump for the full image in high resolution, plus quotes from director Peter Jackson and co-writer Philippa Boyens on the story and production.

Image via Hero Complex.

After a troubled development, Jackson says he’s been lucky with The Hobbit, though Hero Complex doubts his conviction:

Quote:
“I think fate has actually been kind to us. Yes, I think fate was kind but I don’t know that we knew that along the way… This is the most enjoyable filmmaking experience of my career, by far, which is interesting since I came into it slightly reluctantly. It’s all unexpected.”
Boyens remarked on the differences between The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings:

Quote:
“The story is very much a children’s story so deciding how to tell this was one of the first things we had to do. Who is the audience? It is very distinctly different, tonally, to Lord of the Rings until the very end and then you begin to see the world of Middle-earth opening up… but, having said that, we felt that it is the same audience [who will come to see the films] and then you start to worry because it is easy to repeat yourself. It is quite a similar journey, you’re going from the Shire to a large, dangerous mountain.”

Something tells me that
[Show spoiler]Bilbo's battling the Spiders of Mirkwood is going to be a major character turning point and trial by fire for his character.

It appears that Jackson and Boyens will go beyond a simple treatment of the The Hobbit and tie it into the Lord of the Rings movies. We still don't know how extensive the background material will be, but it seems obvious that it will include Gandalf obtaining the Dwarf ring from Thrain at Dol Guldur. With two movies available to tell the story, we may further speculate that the history of the Dwarf ring will be told, which could involve the travels of Thror, Thrain, and Thorin after their defeat by Smaug at the Lonely Mountain, and the history of the Dwarves at Moria. Since Jackson likes to show battles, it is not unreasonable to expect at least a cameo of the The War of the Orcs and the Dwarves (and how Thorin got his name "Oakenshield"). A minor possibility would also be to include a brief history of the dragons including Ancalagon, the greatest dragon in Middle-earth, and how Smaug ended up occupying the Lonely Mountain.

Also, since the function of the White Council (which will certainly be shown) is to expel Sauron from Dol Guldur, we may also see some brief scenes concerning the Rings of Power, which Sauron was gathering at D.G. while taking shape. If so, we might get to see Celebrimbor forging the Rings. Possible (but less likely), Gil-galad sending Elrond from the Grey Havens to Hollin to counter Sauron, and Elrond's flight to Imladris to counter the first siege, and the dispersal of the Elven rings to Gil-galad (-> Elrond), Cirdan (-> Gandalf), and Galadriel. We can reasonably speculate that Sauron's flight to Mordor will be shown, and perhaps the occupation of Minas Morgul by the Witch King and Ringwraiths. Also marginally possible (among many scenarios that occurred during that time period) would be the landing of the Numenoreans to fight Sauron, and the abduction of Elrond's wife Celebrian by the Orcs, etc.

New characters at Imladris that I would like to see (even if only cameos) would be Elrond's sons Elladan and Elrohir, Erestor, and especially Glorfindel, one of the few characters in Middle-earth (along with Beren) to be reincarnated. I would imagine we will also get to see a younger Aragorn at Imladris. Likewise, in the Shire we might get to see Bandobras Took, who invented the game of golf, and Gerontius "The Old Took" whom Bilbo finally surpassed in age in LotR.

I had high hopes for meaningful added scenes in the LotR EE's. I am equally hopeful that Jackson/Boyens will make the most of the extra time available by including saga-related material with the two Hobbit movies.

You are correct in that it has been well documented that the source material for these 2 movies will have to go well beyond the Hobbit novel, especially to fill potentially 5-6 hours of screen time dependingon how long each is.

I think your hopes of what is to be included is very ambitious, but certainly a little much given that he has to still cover the main story. I think a prologue or more extensive beginning about the dwarves history would be great, especially telling about thorin and their first defeat. Yet I still hold true to the belief that we will not see too much of smaug in the first film, so maybe in a flashback or some sort of beginning to the second movie.

And the photo above, looking at the webbing in the background, I am guessing is the mirkwood scene.
