Agreed. I'm happy Jackson ended up doing it so they'll hopefully segue perfectly into the LOTR trilogy.

True... but NOT if it's so completely out of order that when you read "The Hobbit" novel you're going "WTF! where did all that movie come from?!?!". Many people hadn't read the books until after seeing the movie (true with me), I saw the movies then went out and found a nice LOTR book set to read.

I love more Lord of the Rings story on screen, I highly welcome it - but it should not be 3 movies with "The Hobbit" as titles - there is NO way everything from the novel needs 3 movies to complete - 2 is already a stretch. There will be TOO much mythology from the Appendices and other books. I also fear, as was done with The Two Towers and Return of the King, that they will stretch out battles too long and create mini-wars that did not exist in the books.

i see that argument come up a lot on why people didn't like the movies and why they are nervous about the same people making the hobbit movies.

aside from Arwyen being in the movies more than the books.

Honestly - Arwyn needed to be in the films as much as she did, the films needed a female touch in order for the women not to get TOO bored... unfortunately all she did in the movies is cry.

There are vast differences, and the only way to appreciate the story (imo) is to read the novels yourself. It will take some time, but you will really appreciate different things about the books and the movies. Pros and Cons of both man.

Here is one example for you;
Movie: Aragorn does not get Narsil (the sword of his kin, the one that cut the hand of Sauron) until the middle of Return of the King, after Arwyn asks her father - Elrond, to reforge it, which he has Elves do.

Novel: Aragorn always had Narsil from the beginning, it was broken and reforged before the events took place of Fellowship of the Ring, and was actually reforged by a Dwarf smith.

Best that you read the books for yourself to find the answers you seek. I've only read "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" twice in my lifetime (once when I was in junior high, and then again after "Fellowship" was released), but I thought the best possible job was done on the films, and in all honesty, and I know this may offend some, I actually prefer the films to the books. There were several instances in the books where Tolkien kind of rambled in my opinion, and needlessly dragged things on...I find the EE's of "The Lord of the Rings" easily the best book-to-screen adaptations I've ever seen.

Actually, it was originally forged during the First Age by the Dwarven smith Telchar, and before the Fellowship of the Ring departed Rivendell on the Quest of the Ring, the shards of Narsil were reforged by the elves into Andúril.

Slight nit-pick: Arwen is the correct spelling, not Arwyen or Arwyn.

Via theonering.net and from the Hobbit annual 2013 come the first pictures of The White Council (including the first image of Saruman the White in The Hobbit - excluding the video blog glimpse)...

[Show spoiler]

...and of Thranduil, Elvenking of Mirkwood and Legolas' dad (warning - big picture).

[Show spoiler]

I love both but it's The White Council that's the most exciting to me. To see those characters - and those actors - interacting is an exciting thought. Saruman interacting with Elrond and Galadriel? Gandalf and Galadriel together? Awesome stuff, can't wait to see it onscreen.

That looks good, and I'm not sure from the photo but it looks like the wizard seated on the left could be Radagast. Jackson has a lot of leeway with the White Council, and could make it intense similar to his treatment of the Council of Elrond in Fellowship, which was well done. I hope he includes more of Elrond's household, such as Erestor, Glorfindel, etc. The Thranduil character in the large photo looks similar to how I would imagine he would appear. So far, so good.

What I really like about it is that that Silmarillion feel of the Elder Elves.

But...shouldn't his eyebrows be blond also?

I recall Jackson commenting that he wanted Legolas to have dark eyebrows for an interesting contrast. In any case, it looks as though they are closer to an 'authentic' elvish appearance. Although Thranduil was not one of the "High Elves", I wonder if Jackson will divulge into some of his history to demonstrate the strife that developed between the Elves and Dwarves when he still dwelt in Doriath with King Thingol?

Oooh, only 2 years to go for the trilogy then. Once the trilogy is done though, that's the end of the saga

Well...don't forget that we most likely will get LotR rebooted 10 years after that because WB will lose their film rights to them unless they film something from them in that time frame.

And you just know that there is no way WB is going to let that happen with such a lucrative franchise and reboots being all the rage now.

The studios also announced the title of the second installment has been named "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug." The second pic had originally been titled "There and Back Again" before a third film took shape.

And that is finally conformation of the second film's title I believe.

11th July 2007 - Harry Potter 5
18th July 2008 - The Dark Knight
15th July 2009 - Harry Potter 6
16th July 2010 - Inception
15th July 2011 - Harry Potter 8
20th July 2012 - The Dark Knight Rises
12th July 2013 - Pacific Rim

With the exception of Potters 5 and 6 they've all been released on the mid-Friday in July - and, obviously, all have done very, very well for Warners, hitting just as schools worldwide break-up and ensuring a long run which will be as important for The Hobbit and its family appeal as it was for Harry Potter (though it's odd that Pacific Rim gets this slot next year and not Man of Steel which is June 14th, but I guess Pacific Rim started filming later and needs a lot of post-production).

So assuming they'll go for a Friday as they have for most I would guess that we'll see The Hobbit 3 on 18th July 2014. There's the chance we may get it on 11th July instead but I think that's slightly too early to hit the family crowds. X-Men: First Class 2 already has the 18th pencilled but I think they may move if Warners want it (after all, as great as X-Men: First Class was, even if Warners go for 11th July it'll still end up getting trounced by The Hobbit if it opens a week later)

After my last guess I wouldn't write this in your diaries just yet though.
