Who was he before he became the leader of the Nazgul, never learned much about that in the books. I wonder if we'll hear anything about it in the Hobbit films but I doubt it.

I can't remember reading much about his past, but I suspect he was one of the Numenoreans that Sauron corrupted. One of his lieutenants occupied Dol Guldur in Mirkwood after the White Council ousts the Necromancer, so we may get to see Nazgul in the Hobbit movie.

I thought the Numenoreans were supposed to be like Elessar Elendil, not like the Witch-King. I guess he did have reason to be worried about turning out like his ancestor then.

Oh, there were some BAD ones, alright. If you get a chance, look up Ar-Pharazon sometime.

If Saruman is such a selfish power monger, how'd he become the leader of the White Council? I think I remember the Necromancer having something to do with that.

Saruman didn't start out that way, but eventually the desire for power did him in. It was only later that the Necromancer snared Saruman, when he decided to use the palantir of Orthanc.

It is the fire ring, it is the reason why Gandalf is essentially fireproof. It is the basis of his pyrotechnical wizardry, and the reason he was able to withstand the balrog's flame... "wielder of the Flame of Aron!"

At that stage in the saga (The Hobbit), I don't think Tolkien had "invented" the Elven rings yet, but it sounds good to me!

By the way, nice avatar.

Wrong... both of us.
I made a typo, but it's Anor, not Arnor.
Minor difference, yes, but both words refer to separate things in Tolkien.

thought it was Anor too. All googles said Arnor. I'm at work or I could have checked for real.

From what I have read, if memory serves, Tolkien had different ideas at different times. One account had the two blue wizards going off into the east as a part of their mission. Another, that they failed in their mission. Radagast in some accounts failed in his mission by becoming enamored with animals and birds of Middle Earth. Other accounts have Radagast's part in the fight against Sauron as being just that - befriending the birds and animals.

Somewhat of an ambiguity here, as "Anor" = "sun", and the "Secret Fire" that Gandalf claims to be a servant of is certainly the Flame Imperishable of Iluvatar (God). They are completely different things.

Tolkien: ''They (the wizards)... came from Valinor, members of the same high order as the Valar, sent by them to Middle-earth with the consent of Eru when the shadow of Sauron began to grow again... their proper function, maintained by Gandalf, and perverted by Saruman, was to encourage and bring out the native powers of the enemies of Sauron. Gandalf alone passed the test."
"Of the Blue little was known in the West; for they passed into the east with Curunir (Saruman), but they never returned, and whether they remained in the East, pursuing there the purposes for which they were sent; or perished; or as some hold were ensnared by Sauron and became his servants, is not now known."

This foe is beyond any of you, run! You shall not pass! Anyone who wonders why this is my new username needs to see that scene again.
