That's how everyone saw LOTR , and also why the choice to shoot these upcoming "Hobbit" films in 48fps 3D continues to puzzle me...just for continuity reasons, wouldn't it have made more sense to shoot it the same way as the LOTR?

Well, I will only be seeing the "Hobbit" films in 2D, so I'm not too worried about all the hype and/or complaints regarding the 3D presentation. If it ends up looking like crap even in 2D, then I will have a serious problem. But again, I have to see it first before I can make any assessment, I'm still in high hopes it's going to look fine (at least to my eyes).

Here is the YouTube vid of Jackson discussing the Hobbit Extended Edition from a few days ago at the 2012 Butt-Numb-A-Thon.

It starts at 1:53

Plus he talks a bit about the content of the next Hobbit film too.

The local theater with both HFR3D and IMAX is only 5 miles from my home, so I will see this at least once or twice in HFR3D, and at least once or twice in IMAX 3D... and definitely never in 2D, lol!

Unfortunately, the screens in the non-IMAX theaters are just too small and far away from the seating to suit my tastes in 3D viewing, so I don't know how impressive HFR is going to look there... I much prefer a 1:1 viewing ratio (distance/screen width) or closer, that's why I love IMAX so much!...

I also prefer movies that are at least 2 1/2 to 3 hours long - so this should fit the bill nicely!

I just got back from the midnight screening of this in HFR3D..

It was a good movie but by no means a great movie in my opinion - I am still a bigger fan of the LOTR trilogy. The good new is that I didn't get nauseous or a headache from the HFR3D and the 3D was really solid! The bad news is that HFR seemed to give the film a "fake" look. Some of it looked like a weird mix between a video game and a documentary. This also made some of the effects look a little bad. This was worst in the beginning so I am thinking I just had to get used to it. I think I would like it better in regular 2D though - it just didn't seem right for the film.

I was expecting the movie to be a little over 3 hours so I didn't find it overly long. I also don't agree with the complaint that it takes too long to get started. I won't go into details but I just didn't find the story to be as epic as I hoped it would be. While Peter Jackson is a really good director, a big part of me wonders what Guillermo del Toro could have done with this! I would like to have seen his take on this universe, as there were a lot of shots that looked just like LOTR..

I'd give it 4.5/6 stars..

You mean you like it better than the other trilogy that you've already been able to see in it's complete form, and had years to revisit and have your appreciation grow over the years. Not surprised.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying? Then again - its late..

I liked any of the movies of the trilogy better than this. Not a bad movie at all just not mindblowing.

finally found my answer. the only theaters that will play the theater in 4k resolution are imax 3d and imax hfr 3d. there are only 58 theaters in the US that are playing it in IMAX HFR 3d, meaning also only 58 theaters playing the hobbit with a 4k master. Im pretty sure no theaters are playing IMax HFR 3d with a 4k master and dolby atmos, I dont think the atmos theaters use dolby atmos but I could be wrong on that part. so the only theater in Wa state that is playing it in 4k imax hfr 3d is in bellvue at the lincoln square cinemas. the only theater in WA state playing it in Dolby atmos which is in 2k on an 80ft screen in dolby 3d with hfr on 4k christie projectors is at the cinetopia in vancouver wa.

If they make it in 48fps then it'll playt back in 48fps in those cinemas which are able. Those who have to go down to 24fps will just skip every other frame so the pace will be the same.Kind of like videogames:higher fps means better motion 'playback'.But probably been explained allready.

I found the film boring until until the 1hr45min mark. I didn't care about anyone. It feels like a story worn thin sadly.

Jackson's 48fps is a great experiment but ultimately falls on its face due to his camera movements at the beginning which is very jarring. Nothing feels real or even more realistic. Honestly, I thought something might have been wrong at the beginning of the film because it seemed like the movements were twice the speed.

The great thing about the LOTR trilogy was a) there is a better story and b) it told the story to geeks and mainstream folk at an equal level.

If you want to see this film, I would recommend 2D 24fps as I'm questioning if everything felt boring to me because of the HFR 3D or not.

That is quite understandable since the book is a short one.Haven't seen it-will do it next year, but to me it sounds like too little meat in the soup for two movies as originally planned let alone three.Maybe I'll wait for the BD...

I saw a special screening in Chicago on Monday and it was awesome. Story wise, I liked lord of the rings more, I though it flowed better. The added a few story lines into the movie that made it feel a bit clunky, but it was still fantastic. Visually, it was amazing. It was the 3d, 48 fps, with Atmos surround sound version and everything was perfect. There was a little bit of blurring in the begging when the camera moved fast, but quickly went away. For the people that say it looks "too real", I definitely did not see that. There was no "soap opera effect", it was just a sharp, fantastic looking picture. The Atmos SS was actually pretty cool. It was my fist experience with it and there was a few times that I actually thought the sound was coming from someone in the theater. Overall, I felt that Peter Jackson and crew did a great job.

Oh, also, keep an eye out for Brett from Flight of the Conchords who makes an appearance as an elf and, if I am not mistaken, sings the song after the movie.

"There was no "soap opera effect", I just equate that phrase with more detail/better immersion and less judder (especially on panning shots) when I read it from people.

Glad you enjoyed it.
