That's the first thing I thought of as well.

I just hope it isn't as bad as the hack job on Alien.

I just saw it at a staff screening. 2D and 24fps (the fancy viewings will come later).

I loved every second of it. Yes, I can see why some have quibbles. And some of those quibbles might even be deserved. But none of them mattered at all to me. I loved it and if I'm left hungry for the next one it's only because I know how much of the really good stuff is left to come.

Glad to hear it. I admit I was a bit worried by some of the critics' mixed reviews, but it seems like fans are loving it.

Guess Mr. Shore won't be receiving an Oscar nomination. A month ago, I would have assumed that was a lock. The Academy isn't big on nominating films that track in music from previous films. Really surprised this happened.

I'm crossing my fingers the EE will give Shore a chance to score the film the way he wanted.

Saw this yesterday, in 24fps 3D. It looked good, I don't really feel 3D adds THAT much to a movie experience but it gave it a little extra depth. I'm definitely curious about the 48fps version, but hardly enough to plunk down for an extra ticket. One of the guys I went to see it with is checking out the 48 version tomorrow, guess I'll have to ask him...

Seeing this is very different from when I saw the Fellowship in theatres obviously - then I wondered how they'd be able to adapt the Tolkien world to film. Now you already now a lot about what it's going to look like, what some of the characters are like and so on. Peter Jackson certainly likes his epic action and fight scenes, sometimes it can feel a bit much compared to the feel of the book (The Hobbit being a much "smaller scale" book than the LOTR trilogy) but it still works. It's also clear that PJ wants to emphasise how this is a prequel to the trilogy and connect it a bit more than another director might have.

Overall, this:

Picked up the two disc deluxe version of the soundtrack today and have it on repeat getting ready for tomorrow. I think I am going to an 11am showing on Friday since I don't do midnight releases anymore. Hope those of you seeing it at midnight have fun.

Just came back from a viewing. I haven't felt this kind of sense of awe and grandeur from watching a film in the cinema since the Star Wars prequels and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

It begs the question, wtf is going on with the critics? I've been seeing raves all over twitter the past couple days, high scores on imdb, and it seems like people on here are loving it too. So what gives?

To them it's all been the length (with the first movie only going to
[Show spoiler] chapter 6 according to one
and the 48fps.

And now it's PJ's rape on Howard Shores score

oh my god....

The Hobbit is awesome and the critics are full of manure!

HFR and CGI are a match made in heaven. The Hobbit just looks... can't even find the words here. I really hope 48FPS 3D becomes Industry standard,24FPS is dead to me.

I'll definitely see this again at least one more time.

10/10

a) Been there, done that
b) Sad tendency of award-givers to "spread the wealth" versus recognizing actual achievement (i.e., Jackson's already had his day in the sun, it's hard to win multiple Oscars in directing categories)
c) Jealousy
d) The bloat of King Kong leaving a bad taste in people's mouths and defining Jackson as a director who doesn't know when to stop
e) I don't think the real story of the success of this project will be written until the release of the third film
