The same year as the original DVD was released. The releases happened exactly like they did for all three lotr films. With a theatrical DVD shortly after it was at the cinema then an extended cut in November time. The extended and theatrical are both on the blu-ray.

IMAX doesn't have Dolby Atmos either I think, though there are only a handful of theaters equipped for it.

Apple trailers uploaded a new clip between Gandalf and Bilbo in 1080p HD.

http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/thehobbit/

I have no more concerns about this film. In that single clip, I can see that PJ & Co. have recaptured that same heart and soul that they delivered in LotR. Just amazing. McKellan and Freeman look like they've knocked this out of the f***ing park. Can't wait for tomorrow.

Yep. That was sweet!

And the BEST thing for me at least, is that I love watching these movies a lot more at home. Whether its on Blu-ray or channel surfing and finding it that way.

When I saw FotR in the theater, I was pretty disappointed in it. However if I find it playing on TV now I just have to stop and watch it.

And I still predict that after all these films have shown, that the Hobbit trilogy will end up being the most revered of the two for the general public.

Just a hunch.

The higher frame rate pretty much wrecked the movie for me.

Was ridiculously too fast in certain scenes.....and turned the image into a glossy vaseliney image.

The 3D was probably the best of seen tho.

I should really go watch it a normal cinema.....

Going to have to see it again in non 3D. I saw it in regular IMAX 3D. Besides them at a peek overlooking and the Eagles the 3D felt like it wasn't there.

The 3D in the Star Trek preview and OZ trailer were awesome. Jurassic Park 3D was a mess.

My eyes aren't the best so everyone else may think differently

I saw this in HFR 3D and really enjoyed it. I will have to see this again as i admit i snore thru about 30 mins of it (not cause it sucked but a human body can only be up so many hrs in a day and i didn't get a nap in to prepare for a 3 hr midnight film) but it was during a down/slow part so picked up everything there was to pick up on.

Definately will catch again looking forward to the 2nd half.

Just got home from seeing it in HFR 3D not too long ago. All I can say is...
[Show spoiler]WOW!!! HFR 3D is the way to go for blockbusters from now on. It took me about 5ish minutes to adjust to the new look but after that it was hyper-clear, hyper-realistic cinema at its finest. I feel that the extra FPS really helped the action scenes, the cgi heavy scenes (aka most of the action scenes), and the landscape scenes. I also didn't find the extra FPS distracting during the dialouge heavy scenes (the dwarf gathering in the hobbit hole, the white council, etc.). I really can't imagine having to watch it in 24 FPS now.

One minor complaint though...
[Show spoiler]While I thought the goblin king looked fantastic as a cgi creation/character, I felt his execution was really cheesy. In particular, when he pops up in front of Gandalf and the Dwarves and says "What are you going to do now, Wizard?" Then Gandalf cuts his stomach open and the goblin king says, "That'll do it," and falls to his death. Just a really cheesy line that felt out of place (at least to me).

Overall, I'd say 4.0 out of 5 stars though. Good storytelling and mind blowing cinematic moments make this a journey worth taking, especially in HFR 3D Can't wait for part 2 next December

Think I'll enjoy it more the 2nd time in 2D. Right now I give it 8/10
