There was more to like about this than to not like. Gandalf, Bilbo, ass kicking dwarves, Rivendel and the meeting, Riddles In The Dark, Radagast running into the Witch King and the Necromancer, the two flashback scenes (especially Erebor....simply stunning, brought back that ol LOTR magical feeling)....all fantastic.
I hate to say this though..at times it felt more like something on the level of Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe than a PJ directed LOTR film. the CGI was absolutely amateurish in certain parts. The Goblin King and the Defiler looked baaaaaaad. Almost cartoonish. also, the dialouge was nowhere near as memorable as any of the first three. I hate to compare but thats where the bar is set. Will definitely watch again. If I had to assign a numerical value to the film....Id say a 7.5/10. A bit of a letdown on first viewing. |

Just read a review that stated it was somewhat dragged out and not quite as epic as LOTR. In other words, there isnt enough subject material to stretch it out into a trilogy but they are anyways. It should be obvious that Im a big LOTR fan so this aint no hatin' post - just curious if anyone felt it was a slightly bloated or stretched out unneccessarily as in "just get on with it already".

I saw it yesterday afternoon and I have to say it was outstanding. Sure, it's pace is a bit slowed down at the beginning but once it gets going like in the last hour and a half or so it's fantastic. Honestly, other than a slow start I don't see where most of the criticisms are coming from. Did people forget that The Hobbit is more jaunty, whimsical story than LOTR? I mean I went into it knowing that it was the first part of a trilogy and a lighter tale at that and my expectations were met. I absolutely loved it. I'd give it an 9/10.
Oh and Martin Freeman.... they could not have gotten that more right. He was absolutely perfect as Bilbo. I don't understand the hate for this movie it's great. It's certainly no "Phantom Menance" Radagast, the Brown is NOT Jar-Jar Binks, The CGI wasn't terrible. This isn't as grim and gritty as LOTR. It has more fantastical elements and characters so it needed more CGI. It definitely was noticeably terrible. I mean my audience absolutely loved it. They laughed, cheered, and gave it an ovation when it ended. I was shocked to come home and see how many people didn't like it. Oh well, at least I liked it. That's all that matters right? lol. ![]() Last edited by Cabby; 12-14-2012 at 11:47 AM. |

Cabby - you summed up my thoughts.
I honestly think people are forgetting that The Hobbit is more light in tone. This isn't a film dealing with the possible end of the world. It's more fun and laid back. It reminded me heavily of the way I felt when I saw the first Pirates of The Caribbean film. Everyone is getting together to go on an adventure to get back some treasure. How can you expect it to be as emotional and gritty as LOTR when the story is clearly more relaxed? I for one loved the fact that we finally got to spend a decent amount of time in The Shire this time around. Plus, Martin Freeman absolutely nailed the part of Bilbo. |

Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by the entire film. I love what Peter Jackson has done with the story and how he has chosen to tell it. Looking forward to the sequels. I think the only problem people are going to have (not me) is that this is a setup movie. The payoff will come by in the 3rd film, but most people don't have that sort of patience.
My favorite part, as well as the audience I was with, was the Gollum sequence. People were actually cheering when they saw Gollum. Andy Serkis and the animation team really outdid themselves too. Gollum, was freaky during this scene, especially the glowing eyes. My only problem with the film was the 48fps. I’ll admit it took me at least an hour to get accustomed to the format. To me, it made most of the film look like I was watching a awesome 3D TV movie. Some parts looked like they were in fast forward, while other slow mo sequences were sped up by the framework. It didn't work. Also, didn't like the look at all, which did detract from the overall presentation of film. I am sure the 3D was better because of it, but it made the movie feel cheaper/lower budget at times. Looking forward to re-watching this on a normal 24fps 3D IMAX projector. I give the movie an easy 8/10, any Hobbit/LOTR fan will be happy with this film. I just recommend watching it in a normal 24fps IMAX 3D theater. |

But the 3D itself and action sequences were better because of it. Last edited by tilallr1; 12-14-2012 at 01:30 PM. |

Did anyone else notice the change of dialogue from the trailer? Most notably Gandalf's lines " which gives us a distinct advantage ". I'm so glad they re-recorded this, as that line in the trailer sounded goofy.
