Nobody will care for a movie like Stories we Tell or Trouble With a Curve in HFR...it will be a niche thing just like IMAX
IMAX is "a niche thing"? I think not.

Surprised at all the venom for HFR. One movie has been released in this format, and some people seem desperate to proclaim (with a bizarre amount of glee) that the format is a gimmick/a niche. Think we should give it some time before we make proclamations like that.

I dunno about that. The technology's been on the radar for a while but I'm aware of only two filmmakers who've expressed any interest in using it.

IMAX is a huge niche. Movies tend to be released in up 4000+ movie prints, at most IMAX can handle around 300 screens in North America.

I am a huge fan of the format but it is niche.

And right now, IMO IMAX is overdoing the releases. I also do not have a problem whatsoever if the movie is shown in IMAX film or digital.

In a way yes.

To make it clearer, last year Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was one of my favorite films of the year, yet it was mostly panned by critics. Did that change my opinion? No. Did I dismiss all critics based on that? No.

I was secure enough in my own read on the film to not let the opinions of others bother me. So when I see people saying that 'critics suck because they don't share my opinion', thats just nonsense thinking.

So yes, when I hear people say that it leads me to believe they need others to agree with them to validate their own thoughts, or else they throw a fit.

I see this happen all the time. You see tons of reviews for products on Amazon that haven't been released yet.

Furthermore, people who tend to see a movie the first day of release also tend to be the biggest fans of the movie and who will tend to be the most positive about it.

Here's some quotes from A.O. Scott in the New York Times today:
This is a bit nit-picky but gnomes are elves in Tolkien's world, not dwarves.

i know what i like and really don't care what critics have to say about a movie......i love the transformers movies for cryin' out loud.

it just annoys me when i read a review like the one i posted and have to listen to some half-wit talk about how a scene could've been redone.....like their ideas are any better.

HFR looks incredible when filming wide shots of scenery but disgusting anywhere else. There is a reason 24fps has been the standard for years. Somes scenes worked amazingly in 48fp but the bad out weighs the good and its just not worth it.

movie was 3 out of 4 stars.

I'm seeing it in HFR3D in the only theatre in the state showing it. Got here an hour early and its already sold out and full of people. The guy next to me has seen it already 3 times. One in 2D, IMAX3D and Regular 3D. He said he wasn't going to see it in HFR3D as he has horrible migraines but it was a must for him.

Any Jar Jar comparisons are absolutely ludicrous. When was the last time you people actually watched The Phantom Menace? Obviously it's a painful experience at any time, but you may need to remind yourself of just how bad Binks was. There is nothing at all in The Hobbit on that scale. Indeed, for cringeworthy humour there is nothing in this approaching Gimli in the Paths of the Dead in the ROTK:EE.

Seems to me, many of the recent posts belong in the theatrical review thread https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...=210276&page=7

Yea, I agree.

Some of these reviews are even creeping into several of the Blu-ray disc threads over in the other forum.

Because 48fps film add significant cost on many levels. A 24fps reel is huge and hard to manage as it is as well. But you can still get them into a car. 48fps, not likely for most cars. In the digital era that changes.

And even then Tolkien's elves aren't hardworking gnomes but aristocratic Faeries (in the Hellboy II sense of the word.)
Which Tolkien was reportedly going to call them in early drafts, but didn't want to "trivialize" an already "children's" story and went with the more Nordic image of them instead. Those who grew up in UK Victorian/Edwardian days have a particularly paranoid horror of "fairy-stories".

(Of course, if you DO want Nordic gnomes in the pointy caps, there's the Swedish "Magic Silver" movies on Instant Netflix. First one's cute, but the sequel's pretty awful.)

Guys, haven't seen the film yet, seeing it on wednesday in Oxford, but i've got to ask. There is a scene in the trailer where Gandalf is walking through Dol Guldur and encounters a witless Thrain in the dungeons of the Necromancer. Is this trailer-scene in the film?

No it's not.

When the film got re-cut into 3 movies that scene was moved to part II.
