If Bilbo fights in it, I'll be concerned. My wee Monkey Brain seemed to detect something of an anti-war statement from Tolkien in the absurdity of the BO5A, which prompts Bilbo to simply walk away from it. An actor said of the planned BO5A, "everyone will have a hero moment" -- that doesn't gel with the Tolkien I know, and certainly not with The Hobbit I know. Showing someone dying and regretting his war actions after an hour of spectacular violence is baking and eating your own cake. EDIT Cue Boyens saying "You can't have a spectacular battle going on and not show it." Oh, yes - you can. You show the relevant parts and show Bilbo walking away from it. You don't need to have every character have a "hero moment" and sensationalize and glorify war - for an hour or so - and then talk out of the other side of your face lamenting the folly of war. That's massive hypocrisy. Unless they're going to turn the BO5A into "Saving Private Hobbit", with insane carnage. I suppose I'm reacting to Armitage saying everyone is going to have a hero moment in the BO5A. That's antithetical to what Tolkien and The Hobbit were about. I fail to see how "you can't" do that in a movie. People in films get knocked out all the time, only to revive later. Suppose it's wise to just wait and see what they do, I'm just saying I really don't need to see everyone have a "hero moment". There is a huge difference between on-screen action, and actual dramatic action. It's called the Theory of Car Chases...in films, whenever you have a car chase, the story actually comes to a dead halt, waiting for the chase to end so the plot can proceed. The more famous examples of this are films like The Rock and 48 Hrs. Lots of car chase action, but nothing actually happens in the narrative until the metal stops clanging, and either the bad guy gets away, or he doesn't.

Can someone explain why Jackson seems to feel the need to refilm The Battle Of the 5 Armies? I'll explain. Jackson had his shooting schedule for the adaptation of the book. None of the cast were required to return, with photograhy taking almost as long as the shoot for Lord Of The Rings. Jackson cut the films together in rough form and told Warner that "With a couple of months extra filming we could have a trilogy."
So either Jackson is shooting additional material for film 2 or 3, or, as has suggested, hasn't shot TBoT5A. Which i personally i don't believe. I think he has shot the battle in the same way as the book, i.e huge swathes of it are experienced by the reader due to Bilbo exiting stage left early, and he is now taking the opportunity to have it be a grandiose spectacle to rival Return Of The King. |

Or you're a good storyteller. Marlin is knocked out and doesn't see his wife and egss gobbled up by the barracuda at the outset of Finding Nemo. It isn't important that we see it, because the movie is about Marlin, not his wife or the barracuda. Likewise, the book of The Hobbit is about Bilbo, not about the dwarves, the elves, or even Gandalf, and in it's own way, makes an anti-war statement at the end. I know, I know, this is the movie, not the book...

In case anyone is interested: I saw 4 Hobbit posters at Walmart for $5 each. One is a map. Another is a group shot. Another is like a movie poster, and the 4th is Bilbo.

I have a question, and I was hoping someone help elaborate.
This movie has X amount of frames in the finished version. If this movie was filmed/projected in 48 fps, how does the projected 24 fps have the same run time? Wouldn't it take longer for the 24 fps projection to play that X amount of frames? Is this a valid question, or am I simply over thinking? |
