Hmmm... No wonder Gandalf had that gleam in his eye when he got on the ship in the Grey Havens.

In "Bored" it would have been funny to have a scene where Goodgulf is telling the bogies to hurry up and say goodbye because he had a date coming up in a few days. Of course I have no idea how long it took to sail to the Undying Lands.

Gandalf doesn't strike me as the kind of immortal who would have an affair with someone else's wife. I do hope they expand his role in the Hobbit films, to a similar level as his role in FoTR.

Interesting question. As a result of Ar-Pharazon's insolence and attempt to take Valinor by force, the Undying Lands were physically removed from the earth. Bilbo, Frodo, and Co. got there via "The Straight Way", but we are not told what time factor was involved.

With the power of the White Rider to help, they could've been there pretty much instantaneously.

@Grandbob & radagast: thanks for the info. I will ask more questions soon. This is the most interesting thread in bluray.com forums and I'm a tolkien fan myself.

I am currently reading fotr(shadow of the past).

BTW...Speaking of Gandalf vs the Witch King...

Here is a painting of the book version by 'Douglas Beekman' from the 1980 calendar.

So which version would you rather see on film? This one or the Jackson EE one?

He's a sensitive guy. When he's at home, he sometimes relaxes with a pink bathrobe and leotards.

Looks like a red cape to me? Also Gandalf always struck me as a tough guy.

Of the many differences between the book and the films, IMO this was a big foobar for the movie. It was a pivotal moment in the book, oozing with symbolism and unforgettable images. The confrontation of the greatest "good" power in Middle-earth vs the Lord of the Nazgul, at the gates of the city at Dawn - an important time for Tolkien. Hard to believe Jackson didn't jump all over that scene and make it one of the most memorable in cinematic history.

It actually seemed to me like Jackson didn't fully understand the power or significance of Mithrandir. I could be wrong, of course.

He had alot on his plate at the time, no doubt, and the vast majority of the films were excellent. I'm not sure if the oversight or dumbing down of that part of the script was due to Walsh and Boyens, or Jackson. Unfortunately, there will be no opportunity in The Hobbit for an equivalent magnitude scene where single representative powers of Good and Evil directly confront each other, unless they want to take extreme artistic license with the White Council ousting Sauron from Mirkwood.

If Del Toro wanted to insert an additional tie-in to the LoTR movies, he could also get away with including Legolas, since Bilbo and the Dwarves crash the party of the group of Elves he belonged to in Mirkwood. Legolas' dad, Thranduil, is the Elven King.

I'd be down with that, as long as they cast someone who's not Orlando Bloom for the role. I just never really bought him as a mighty, ancient Elven warrior.

That sound's more like Zorro The Gay Blade rather then Gandalf

I noticed that myself. At least he is wearing his pointy hat in that pic.

And does anybody know why Jackson does not have Gandalf wear that hat anymore after Moria for the remainder of the movies???

Bob...I have to believe the main reasoning behind this was that Jackson had such a hard-on for the CGI battles(see that very lengthy Sauropod stampede from King Kong, yeesh) that he would rather have that scene removed from the movie so that he could show more Giant Trolls and Orcs rampaging through the streets of Minas Tirith, which though pretty neat never happened in the book.

Now that's my take on it and I am sticking to it.

BTY, I have to wonder if any interview ever questioned Jackson on this and what his response was?

.
