Yup that definitely stuck out. It always amazes me the difference between the behind the scenes footage vs the finished product.

semi-interesting to start but the clips and new cast members (as well as the old returning ones) have me more excited for this one that anything I saw before the first one

2nd movies already got some kinda vibe I like

Agreed - I think a lot of that was down to the earthy-brown tint of the scene, which works better than the dingy blue glimpsed in the AUJ trailer. I loved the design of that set - knowing what came out of those tombs and the idea of them escaping gives the place a nice eerie vibe.

I'm not sure what people were expecting - more footage perhaps but we got to see loads of glimpses of behind the scenes stuff, a fair bit of information and a lot of good-natured humour and enthusiasm. There was stuff I was hoping to see (Beorn mostly) but I can understand why they'd hold back.

All in all I found it a very enjoyable and interesting watch and something different from the usual promotional fluff.

I'm joking. But I disagree - Jackson has always struck me as a good-natured and genuine guy with an honest enthusiasm for what he does. Not sure how it was an ego trip except for him sitting back and receiving messages from the fans - which is exactly what a Q+A is.

More excited for the next one after rewatching the first movie and watching the live event. It gives an idea of what they're doing with the 3 movies. I guess like The Two Towers, the next movie will open up the cast of characters and points of view. The Laketown stuff looks interesting. Especially Stephen Fry's scenes which don't really resemble anything we've seen in these movies before. Sounds like they're doing more with Bard than I'd anticipated.

Will be interesting to see the Mirkwood Elves. Intriguing glimpses of Thranduil. Didn't care for his brief appearance in the first movie, but the character seems more commanding when he's actually interacting with other characters. Still skeptical about the new female Elven character, but the behind the scenes footage of Evangeline Lily in the role has me curious to see what they have planned for her.

The live event does confirm the somewhat inexplicable attention they're giving Aiden Turner's dwarf (Kili?). I found it somewhat offensive that he's the only dwarf without prosthetics, just because they want the female audiences to find him attractive. He didn't really stand out in the first movie so I wonder if they have plans to bring him to the fore in the sequels.

I assume you've read the book but I'll put this in spoiler tags anyway -
[Show spoiler]although I agree that he has been hotted-up for the ladies (a change that doesn't bother me considering the bunch of different-looking dwarves we also have in the company) I would suspect they are focusing on him and Fili as they are the ones who die in the Battle of Five Armies. Makes sense the make sure they are two of the dwarves the audience know best to sell the emotion of it so I agree with you that he will be brought to the fore.

I think so far they have done a good job at fleshing out the dwarves. They only have so much time - even with the expansion - but so far I feel we've got a good handle on Thorin, Fili, Kili, Bofur, Balin, and, to a lesser extent, Dwalin, Dori and Ori. They've at least stuck out and had moments to identify themselves. That's 8 out of 13, it's not bad for the first film. After all, Gimli and Legolas weren't fleshed out much in Fellowship, focusing instead on Boromir and Aragorn. It took the second film to really get to know them.

Great stuff. But as much as I liked AUJ, seeing the footage today actually made me long for the original 2-film structure. The film would have been so much more satisfying going all the way to Mirkwood (and would have obviously had tighter editing as well).

Makes sense they'd want to focus on Kili and Fili. It just bothers me that Aiden Turner is the only actor playing a Dwarf that they've actually made more handsome after hair and makeup! Richard Armitage and Dean O'Gorman are good looking guys as well, but they both got uglied up a bit.

There is no trailer, you can call off the search. Peter Jackson said one would be coming sometime in the summer.
