Legolas looks like shit. Absolutely terrible

Too many shitty CGI battles with bad physics.

It was a good trailer though.

I'm glad that the barrel escape sequence from the Tolkien book is intact in this second movie. That's pretty awesome.

The dragon looks cool enough, but I'm still partial to Vermithrax from the 1981 movie, Dragonslayer. (...and Dragonslayer needs to be released on Blu-ray, for heaven's sake)

CGI in places obviously needs some work, but they have five months to fix that. Smaug will undoubtedly look a lot better by the time of release.

This trilogy is just not going to be for me.

Azog and all the cgi orcs just kill it for me. I have no idea why he went the cgi route for this trilogy when it was perfect in the original trilogy. Really disappointing.

Agreed. I still think these are great films but not even in the same universe as LOTR.

Looks good, but I really wish we didn't see Smaug until being in the movie theater. I didn't realize they were keeping his appearance a secret only until the first trailer.

I liked the first and I expect to like all three, but I agree with the sentiment about the CGI. Outside of Gollum, it's not killer CGI like when LOTR came out. There is not much weight to the stuff I've seen on screen and it hurts being invested in the movie a bit.

Yep, the lack of weight just kills it.

Alien, Aliens, Predator, LOTR trilogy, etc...These movies really don't age because they went as practical as possible.

There is no excuse whatsoever not to put a 7 foot athlete in an awesome costume and have him play Azog. It would make the movie a 1000x better. Go back and watch the Lurtz scenes and look how incredible they still are to this day.

Such a massive miss by Jackson and co.

He's often complained about how hard the filming of the LOTR trilogy was, especially in some of the earlier Hobbit production videos. My guess is he's going this route because it's more convenient and it's easier to manipulate digital images than it is extras or stuntmen?

But I'm like you, the latter looks much better on film than all of this cgi.

Count me in as one who thinks it's a bit ridiculous they're using only CGI and not as much practical as they did with 'Lord of the Rings'. That was one of my biggest problems with the last film, because it kept completely pulling me out of the film.

That said, I did like the trailer for the new film, and I think it looks much better than the first. I'll definitely be there opening night, like I was for the last four films, and I look forward to returning to Middle Earth once again.

I think the CGI works well in The Hobbit movies as a stylistic choice making it feel more like a fantasy. The same way the CG in 300 isn't meant to look realistic. It gives The Hobbit an 'artwork come to life' feeling. Lotr is more raw and gritty where the practical effects help in establishing that tone.

The CGI is only to add to the more fantastical style of the film, The Hobbit is supposed to be a little more lighthearted. Although I agree that it looks a little more like cartoons here.

(And before anyone comes in and gives us a bit of a bollocking, yes, we do understand that CGI is necessary to make a film like this, it's just the fact the cgi is a little less effective here than the originals linancy towards practical when practical can do attitude.)

As for the trailer, it looks good in the same way the first Hobbit looked, as in I'm not wowed but it doesn't hurt that I have to see it because it's essential viewing.

Exactly. Not to mention they still have a few more months to finalize the CG. I'm pretty sure it won't look like pre-vis sequences when it releases.
Btw, the score is pretty impressive.

Looks so damn fun and enjoyable. Smaug looks pretty abysmal but I am not gonna let that ruin anything for me. looks like a ton load of more great action and adventure scenes.
