Obviously. For 100 different reasons. Fantasy is grounded on the principle that what you are seeing is real. If the illusion is lost, the movie suffers. How can movement of human characters be realistic if the physics are awful? I expect CGI to be 100% realistic otherwise there is no point, in any movie. Bad physics are a bad wake up call which says "you are in a movie and this doesn't work that way". Total immersion killer. How can anyone watch humans move like cats and not get fussed about it?

The first movie also had some bad physics (the bridge sequence near the end - over the top and unrealistic), the LotR trilogy had some (but very few) bad scenes as well (Legolas walking on the Oliphant).

Alien, Aliens, Predator, LOTR trilogy, etc...These movies really don't age because they went as practical as possible.

There is no excuse whatsoever not to put a 7 foot athlete in an awesome costume and have him play Azog. It would make the movie a 1000x better. Go back and watch the Lurtz scenes and look how incredible they still are to this day.

Such a massive miss by Jackson and co.

That said, I did like the trailer for the new film, and I think it looks much better than the first. I'll definitely be there opening night, like I was for the last four films, and I look forward to returning to Middle Earth once again.
I love CGI but yeah, I totally agree with these posts.

That's the exact film I am thinking when talking about bad physics. The Neville/broomstick sequence is awful.

Trailer looks awesome! But I agree with the majority here, too much CGI - it's very noticable. CGI in a film like this shouldn't be so noticeable. You would really think that a guy in a costume is much cheaper than all that CGI design, programming and rendering! gawsh, and the results would have been better almost guaranteed, as long as the character isn't meant to be flying like a wasp all the time.

But, I am looking forward to the movie as I am a huge LOTR fan and have all the core books.

@Lnds500; I agree.

The physics of CGI need to be realistic these days, unless you're talking about a children's ants-in-the-pants throwaway time killer movie like freaking doodlebops or something.

When you're talking about a film with a good story, characters you actually like and are invested in the outcome of the events and you want to be immersed and be able to believe that the world you are watching is possible, than the quality of CGI matters - the characters can't be uncharacteristically cartoony or jump off the walls all the time and act stupid (Jar Jar Binks anyone???). In 2013 we shouldn't have CGI characters that look that cartoony!

I noticed this as well.
[Show spoiler]I'll give it a pass, though. The old "climb into a barrel and escape down the river" thing might have worked decades ago when Tolkien wrote his book, but wood-elves are smarter these days. Especially CGI ones.

Man! After watching that a few times, I REALLY am desiring to see the Silmarillion made into an HBO series.

Could you just imagine the epicness that would be?

The trailer was ok, but I'm having difficulty getting into the films. The first film was so slow - and yes I get it, it was establishing the story - that I'm going to need more to get me excited. The LOTR films hold a special place in my heart, and they always will, but The Hobbit will need to really pick it up in the second film to keep me interested.

But who are we kidding, of course I am going to see all three films.

Exactly. I've never been a reader by any means and yes Star Wars is my thing. I've just recently decided I've wanted to give The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings books a shot (since I've always been such a fan of the films), so I'm looking forward to them

There's the shot of what looks like a bear (I can't think what else it would be) trying to break through a door with the Company on the other side, followed by a shot in the same scene of Bilbo drawing his sword. it's assumed (and probable) that i's Beorn - although he looks huge.

EDIT - here ya go.

You could also consider the fact that he took over for GDT. I'm sure some compromises had to be made. At what stage of planning did he take over?

But also it's only natural for someone to become a little content (not necessarily lazy) after they poured their hearts into a piece of work. Everything was to get to that point, then you arrive and it's like now what?

Yes. For one thing, for some inexplicable reason, Jackson decided to leave out Gollum's final utterance.

I am STILL trying to figure that one out.

AAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!

You just have to say it yourself, and pretend it came from one of your speakers.

It was even in the South Park episode. Maybe those boys should have made the movie...

(But I was referring to the 150 odd pages that follow... wow! But the movie would have been too long...)

Not a good choice to start, if you're not a reader. LOTR is harsh to read for "young" readers...
