[Show spoiler]Rumor has it that he was in the LotRs movies as Gandal's moth friend. I guess that he is changed into it by the necro during the Dol Guldur assualt in the next film.

At first I did not really believe it, however after watching this 2nd installment, I am now fully expecting it.

Yikes. You may be right!

I have noticed his avatar too. Don't remember much about the cartoon, but the art work always kind of intrigued me a bit.

Yep. Near the end of AUJ when they were in the trees and throwing flaming pine cones at the orcs, Gandalf sent off the moth to go get the eagles to save them.

I thought that one was a butterfly. Was it a moth also?

[Show spoiler]Maybe Sauron has been busy turning a lot of people into insects then.

Inside Information...
Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo's own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we've gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the "Desolation of Smaug".

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" it is.

As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.

Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months.

And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.
It’ll be a fun year!

There and Back Again was a better title. Battle of the Five Armies sounds too generic. Like an Asylum knock-off. Jackson should stop fussing with it.

Love the new title.
Much better than There and Back Again.

Also very cool we are getting over 25 mins of new footage in the extended version of Smaug.
That is a very nice amount of material and about twice as much new footage than we got on AUJ's extended cut.

Here we go.

Quote:
The leather gauntlets are off and the swords are drawn! Viggo Mortenson of Aragorn fame has been publicly slating Peter Jackson's directing.

Mortenson clearly missed the memo that Jackson is a global treasure for his work on Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which might explain why the actor was absent from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

In an interview with the British newspaper, The Telegraph, Mortenson was candid about his opinions of Jackson's overenthusiastic use of CGI.

The Danish-American actor gave The Fellowship of the Ring his blessings, largely because it was shot in one huge push. He explained that he though the movie was superior because;

"It was very confusing, we were going at such a pace, and they had so many units shooting, it was really insane. But it’s true that the first script was better organized."

He then went on to shoot some seriously shade about Jackson's love of CGI. The actor told interviewers that;

"Peter was always a geek in terms of technology but, once he had the means to do it, and the evolution of the technology really took off, he never looked back."

Mortenson then went on to suggest - not so subtly -that the sequels started to loose touch with the originals gritty, organic qualities and implied that it was all downhill from there. He explained that;

"In the first movie, yes, there’s Rivendell, and Mordor, but there’s sort of an organic quality to it, actors acting with each other, and real landscapes; it’s grittier. The second movie already started ballooning, for my taste, and then by the third one, there were a lot of special effects. It was grandiose, and all that, but whatever was subtle, in the first movie, gradually got lost in the second and third. Now with The Hobbit, one and two, it’s like that to the power of 10."

Talk about hitting it where it hurts...

There has been speculation that Jackson is planning some surprise cameos from Lord of the Rings actors in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, but my guess is Mortenson definitely won't be getting an invite. The star has always suggested that he wasn't interested in reprising his role, but now it seems certain there is little chance of him getting back on the horse.

As all Lord of the Rings fans worth their salt will know, there are some holes in Mortenson's argument. For a start, all of the Lord of the Rings movie were shot in one epic chunk.

Apparently it is the endless re-shoots that really got Mortenson's hackles up and caused the movies to 'balloon'. He went on to deliver yet more shady comments to the newspaper by saying;

"The second and third ones were a mess. It was very sloppy — it just wasn’t done at all. It needed massive reshoots, which we did, year after year. But he (Jackson) would have never been given the extra money to do those if the first one hadn't been a huge success. The second and third ones would have been straight to video."

So, there you have it.

You can't get a more damning critique of deigning the latter films in the Lord of the Rings trilogy as straight to video fodder.

Is Mortenson bitter, or is there some truth in what he has to say about Peter Jackson's direction?

I respect Viggo and he's one of my favorite actors working right now, but he's off his rocker. Every movie of this size has reshoots in one way or another and Jackson is always honest about changing things that aren't working when he's seeing the film cut together. That's a very good way to work. There's no ego in his editorial decisions about his films. If it's not working for him, he restructures the film and reshoots scenes if necessary. The story in TTT and ROTK is vastly more complicated and larger than in Fellowship, both in that there are new characters being introduced and the story becomes more epic in scale. It's the same way in the books as well, so this complaint is very silly. The films have always been brilliant about being epic and intimate, even at the same time. It's one of Jackson's greatest strengths as a filmmaker.

Jackson and Boyens made some unneccessary changes and further complicated matters with TTT and ROTK. And its no secret that Jackson lets his productions balloon out of control and go far beyond his original plans due to poor management. For instance: the Hobbit trilogy which was supposed to be two 3 hour films turned into three 3 hour films by the end of production. Despite what I may think of the final products that is some horrid script and production management.

Yep. Don't get me wrongo, I'm loving the Hobbit movies so far, as I did the LOTR movies before them, but PJ's production methods are akin to a runaway train and it's a testament to his skills that he still manages to produce coherent movies instead of train wrecks.

IMO, he was honest enough to admit what others were afraid to do. The special effects were beginning to diminish the last two LotR films, and have completely consumed the Hobbit movies.

Default The Hobbit Trilogy (Dec 14, 2012; Dec 13, 2013; Dec 17, 2014)

FOTR has always seemed more gritty to me. Yes they filmed them back to back but after the films saw success they were able to add much more gci to the next two. TTT and ROTK even look brighter compared to the first one, which is ok i guess but I always preferred the darker cinematic look of the original. Also the brighter it got the more the cgi stuck out.

Cgi is amazing with creatures like davey jones, gollum, smaug. Yoda, and the list goes on, but otherwise it can go over the top sometimes.

I always liked FOTR the most out of the trilogy as it seemed to have the best balance of Story/Action. Theres nothing id change in it.

In TTT and ROTK there is a few changes id make. starting with that terrible CGI legolas flippin up onto a horse as it goes past in TTT.

Still love it as a trilogy though.
