I like the picture, but The Battle of "The" Five Armies?

From The Hobbit chapter "The Clouds Burst",:
'So began a battle that none had expected; and it was called the Battle of Five Armies; and it was very terrible.'

It may seem trivial, but if it is going to be the title of the movie, they should get it right. One wouldn't have expected Spielberg to name his movie "The Jaws".

It is very trivial, but Jackson may have included the definite article because The Five Armies in the film will be an official alliance (think The Allied Powers in WW2) to overthrow Sauron's army.

It fits with the fact that he's also changing the story quite a bit.

One thing that has concerned me from the beginning of this production (apart from the plot and character deviations), is that despite the hundreds (thousands?) of dedicated artisans working on the film, there appears to be a lack of oversight of the details. The poster is a small example, but there are others. For example, WETA's map of Middle-earth (which I believe was once or perhaps still is for sale), looks great at first glance. But then you start to notice the details; the River Anduin, the major river of Middle-earth that is at the center of action of all of the stories is not labeled. Also, Gondor and Mordor are not even on the map, etc. It seems like there was a ton of people working on the project, but no major oversight by someone who was grounded in the story to ensure it made sense. This is in contrast to The Lord of the Rings, where it seems that Jackson had others (Tolkien or Middle-earth "consultants"?) involved to "keep it honest".

The average movie-goer will who is just looking for a thrill ride will not care about this, but I believe this is a reason Jackson has lost a share of the once fervent fan-base (such as myself) that once enthusiastically supported his projects. With the Hobbit movies, there is sufficient attention to peripheral details such as costumes and special effects, but not as much for the most important aspect - the story. This is what made The Lord of the Rings movies stand above other special effects intensive films such as Battleship (sorry, it came to mind first because it was recently aired), and what gives Tolkien's fantasy world an apparent "authenticity" that makes it the standard to which all other stories of the genre are measured - his meticulous obsession with detail. Once again, I invite anyone interested in background information to browse through Christopher Tolkien's "History of Middle-earth" series to get an appreciation for the magnitude of the effort that was invested in these stories. I would imagine that (despite the financial success of the first two Hobbit movies) Jackson and Boyens are also aware of this, so I am anxious to see if this concern has been addressed to redeem the final installment in December.

At 3 PM EST!

I'm guessing it's the same teaser they showed at Comic Con which I heard was awesome.

I saw this. So dumb how it's become standard for trailers to get trailers.

Sure, but I prefer the trailer itself to be the thing to build hype and excitement. An advertisement for an advertisement, that just feels silly to me. Not that it's a huge deal, I'm not killing puppies and setting preschools on fire over this.

For what it's worth, in Appendix B of The Return of the King, it is named "The Battle of the Five Armies." So while the subtitle is a little wordy for my tastes (one 'the' too many, I think), there's nothing wrong about it. I don't know which name was preferred by Tolkien, but I'd assume it's the one listed in the appendix.

And in response to Cook (and movie spoilers, I guess),
[Show spoiler]the five armies in the book are wolves, orcs, elves, men, and dwarves. The latter three are allied together against the first two. Whether or not this will be the case in the film I have no idea.

Exactly.

So, my quick post was meant to convey this: "That awesome poster had better be the cover for the Extended Edition of The Battle of The Five Armies!".

Default The Hobbit Trilogy (Dec 14, 2012; Dec 13, 2013; Dec 17, 2014)

The subtitle is not long compared to the last two hobbit subtitles. But if it makes you feel better, you can petition for it to be changed to Armies, Battle, or just: Five
