MGM controll shifted, Warner Bros. (and fans) frustrated over ‘The Hobbit’ potential greenlight

Ringer spy Earl provided a story hot of the presses from the Los Angeles Times that says MGM’s management is no longer in control of the studio’s fate and that debtholders are now the decision makers.

The MGM Saga is developing into a film-worthy drama all its own (one that will never get a greenlight) and the article states: “The internal divide and lingering uncertainty demonstrate how tortured MGM’s reorganization process has been and how the balance of power has shifted from management to lenders.”

For fans this means that non-entertainment types are now calling the shots and how that plays out is completely unpredictable. There is one tidbit about the two movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” to be directed by Guillermo del Toro and produced by Peter Jackson:

“Though Time Warner’s bid has not been officially rejected, people at the media giant’s Warner Bros. studio have been frustrated by the protracted process, in part because it and MGM co-own the rights to movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” which are currently in development.”

The article explains a lot more of the intricacies of what is going on. How does this fit with the report that filming will start in November? We have our feelers out and will update you as soon as we hear anything definite.

It still amazes me how hard it has been to get a project moving that is almost guaranteed to bring in $2b theatrical between the two films. It would take a lot to cause them to fail and it looks like they are trying their hardest.

I hope Del Toro and Jackson have final cut. Execs and share holders are known for bad decision making. Man this is taking such a long time.

Finally, the project gets the green light for filming.

It feels like we've suffered an endless series of rumors, half-truths and denials about when, if ever, The Hobbit will actually start filming. Giving that the financing studio MGM was in pretty dire straits, it started to seem as if the movie might get put on hold like the next James Bond, dragged out when the studio got its act together.

But hope springs eternal for the Hobbit faithful, and Market Saw has some great news for them-- their source is claiming that the movie has been officially greenlit, with production set to start in November. You may remember that one of Peter Jackson's frequent dodges of the "will it ever get made?" question is to say the project hasn't been greenlit yet, so there's no point in speculating. You can imagine he'd want to keep the green light under a bushel for a little while longer to allow pre-production to move forward in peace, but if this rumor has the story right, we may start hearing actual news-- not just actor hearsay-- about this project soon.

Market Saw being a blog devoted to 3D, they also have their source saying that "the usual 3D technical suspects have been rounded up," which suggests the two-part film will be in 3D. That part you may as well just plan on-- any tentpole that goes into production without 3D these days had better have a damn good reason for it. As for the actual production, well, we'll have to wait for official word before putting our hobbit feet back on for good.

Hobbit in 3D? I dunno...

Hopefully it's not going to be the big draw and they focus most of their efforts on the 2D detail.

I just watched Shrek 3D this weekend, and I was disappointed in it. There were times when images seemed 'doubled' and the having to wear the glasses made the viewing slightly uncomfortable. Who knows how much wasted time and money they are going to invest in 3D for the Hobbit. Blah.

Guillermo del Toro Confirms Hobbit Delay Source: Silas Lesnick May 27, 2010


Speaking moments ago at a press conference for his latest production, Splice, Guillermo del Toro responded to questions about the state of The Hobbit, saying that the film does not have a start date, nor will it until MGM sorts out its financial troubles.

"It's not greenlit," said del Toro, "That's categorical... We've been caught in a very tangled negotiation... There cannot be any start dates until the MGM situation gets resolved. They do hold a considerable portion of the rights."

Responding to rumors that the film would shoot in 3D, del Toro said that, while 3D remains a possiblity, it has been discussed "literally once" in the production offices and it is not being planned at this time. The current production budget has been drawn without 3D in mind.

Admitting no predictable timeline for a start date, del Toro theorized one possible outcome that would see MGM sharing or selling off the rights. Nevertheless, he feels confident that the film will move forward as soon as a decision is made.

"We have designed all the creatures," he said, "We've designed the sets and the wardrobe. We have done animatics and planned battles sequences.... We are very, very prepared for when it is finally triggered."

EXCLUSIVE! THE HOBBIT Is Greenlit!!! Full Pre-production Underway And You Can Expect A S3D Experience!!!


**UPDATE - May 28: I have now heard from another top source embedded in New Zealand - 3D is definitely going to happen as all the animatics are being geared that way. If you want to believe what the official company line is - go ahead. This info is straight from my top sources. This source is less gung-ho about the green light announcement happening soon however. I will stay where I am though and that is touting that THE HOBBIT is greenlit and it is full steam ahead for November.

**SAME DAY UPDATE: Strike a nerve have we? This post seems to have upset a "Hobbit focused" website a tad! They checked with their own sources and came up with a resounding "no" for the greenlight and even for the 3D, yet again. Sorry guys - no dice. My intel comes straight from the source that gave me the world's first glimpse of a Na'vi. So you can indeed take it to the bank. Do I sound confident? Good. I suspect official word will be coming down the pipe sometime soon.

YES! Finally. One of my top sources has confirmed with me that THE HOBBIT has now been greenlit!!

Full pre-production is now underway!!

There is still no official word that THE HOBBIT will be in stereoscopic 3D, but my source reiterates: "the usual 3D technical suspects have been rounded up... so I would bank on it."

I find it quite interesting that when other sites (*ahem* Deadline) mention the fact that the commence shoot date is slated for November, they think they are the ones breaking the news. You all know I broke that exclusive story back in March (with photos of the new sound stages). Sometimes you just want to reach out and... Well you know :-)

And don't even get me started on these sites talking THE HOBBIT in 3D as being a new concept!

So everyone - a collective sigh of relief: THE HOBBIT is definitely moving forward and November is the goal to roll cameras. Rest assured it will be in 3D just like I have been saying for years. I love it when a plan comes together!!
