Reports say Blomkamp will not direct ‘Hobbit’

June 22nd, 2010 by MrCere

NYMag.com says that Neill Blomkamp will not direct a pair of ‘Hobbit’ movies to be produced by Peter Jackson. The online magazine cites an insider at William Morris Endeavor, Blomkamp’s agency, with the info that not only will he not be directing, he was never contacted by Warner Bros. or MGM.

TORn didn’t say Blomkamp would direct, only that a source claimed to have viewed a film breakdown and a lot of the sources info fit with other whispers from other sources. The shortest line between Blomkamp and the film would run though New Zealand and Jackson, not L.A. studios, but NYMag isn’t going to make the report unless its source is solid. Read the whole account right here.

We know Jackson will be in Los Angeles next week and have heard he is there now meeting with studios who are trying to get him to sit in the director’s chair. We have further heard some of his high-placed team is in London working on casting.

According the Entertainment Weekly, Peter Jackson is in talks to take over directing responsibilities for The Hobbit:

I wouldn't say it's saved, a lot of things still need to happen before this movie can begin pre-production, production, post-production and then finally get a theatrical release.

It looks like Peter Jackson might direct the two "Hobbit" movies after all.

Jackson is in negotiations to helm the films, which were left without a captain after Guillermo del Toro parted ways on May 30. Obstacles to a deal remain, including agreeing on a schedule that will allow Jackson to fast-track the films for release in 2012 and 2013, but insiders are cautiously optimistic that a pact can be worked out.

Talks, which have been going on for a week or two, heated up in recent days between Warner Bros./New Line and Jackson's team. Complications include the shaky financial situation of partner MGM, which owns the "Hobbit" rights and could hold up the production timetable. A significant delay would be a dealbreaker for Jackson.

Del Toro left the project over similar timing concerns. His move caught observers by surprise because the filmmaker had devoted so much time to work with Jackson drawing up plans for the movies, and working on the script with Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillippa Boyens. He moved his family to New Zealand. Casting was even in the early stages.

But since his departure, Warners/New Line, which runs point on the production over partner MGM, never did a full-on search for a director, even as some names surfaced as possible contenders. Why? Because Warners/New Line was trying to woo Jackson back to Middle-earth.

Jackson has other commitments -- the director has been working on secret projects -- and wasn't sure he wanted to devote another chunk of his life to the tales of J.R.R. Tolkien. But because of the complicated nature and the advanced stage of the undertaking -- Middle-earth was being built from the ground up when del Toro left so unexpectedly -- it wasn't simply filling a chair with a warm body.

To Warners/New Line, Jackson is the most logical choice not only because he made the "Lord of the Rings" movies but also because he is deeply involved as a producer on the "Hobbit" films.

Insiders say the next few days will be crucial in the negotiating process between Jackson's camp and the Warners/New Line side.

Right on the money!

I am hoping Jackson does both movies, I think his style on The Hobbit will tie in more closely with Lord Of The Rings

I also won't be holding my breath.
It's not really news, it's a report of escalated wishful thinking... that is, instead of just fans, it's the studios who are also voicing their "wish" for Jackson to direct (which they have always wanted, hence this is not news), and still nothing is confirmed or even agreed upon. The way this has gone, I won't take anything for granted until the film is in the can and shows it's first premiers. I'll believe it when I see it.

UPDATED WRITE-THRU - EXCLUSIVE: In what amounts to a dream come true for fans of Middle Earth, Peter Jackson has decided to direct two installments of The Hobbit, trusted sources are telling me. His deal is being negotiated right now with Warner Bros , New Line, and MGM. He will shortly take the reins over from Guillermo del Toro, after Jackson extricates himself from other project obligations that caused Jackson and manager Ken Kamins to initially deny he would direct. While Jackson’s camp has been tight-lipped, I’m told that the case is being made to MGM's owners to loosen the purse strings and make the movies happen. The impetus for these talks is that Jackson will be the director of both of The Hobbit films, which will be shot back-to-back in his New Zealand backyard. The secret's out.

Wow, you know, maybe MGM and WB/New Line should have let him direct it back when it was first announced. I don't know, maybe, we would have had the freakin' films made all ready back when it was announced back in like 2007.

He didn't want to.
Jackson is the producer, hiring Del Toro was Jackson's choice, not WB/MGM.

Del Toro quitting is a major loss, period. Fans gain nothing from Jackson directing, Jackson was already attached as screenwriter and producer, he was already a major creative force in this production, he wanted to bring in a director that would contribute to the team.

The schedule, as it has gone so far, has been Jackson's schedule, not WB/MGM's schedule. Without the work already contributed by Del Toro, they would be even further behind schedule right now. Jackson has been way too busy to take this on himself; if he takes over directing, that pretty much assures even further delays.

Consider the following report when evaluating the quality of any rumor coming out of MarketSaw:

Quote:
What?! Yea – that’s what we said. A website called MarketSaw is reporting that Peter Jackson is confirmed to be directing two films based on ‘The Hobbit’ and both will be presented in 3D format. Then, after The Hobbit films are released (2010,2011 respectively), the original trilogy will be converted to 3D after the release of the two Hobbit Films. Let’s not get too excited quite yet. If we judge this website based on the amount of junk advertising, we can pretty much write this off as an unconfirmed pipe-dream. But, ya never know! On a personal note, the PJ directing The Hobbit sounds great to me…the 3D, not so much.
I dug this up off of TOR.n; this is old, I know, but I think it serves as a nice retrospective on just how (un)reliable of a source MarketSaw really is.

I hope that one day we learn the true reason Del Toro quit the film, but with rumors building that Jackson is taking over, I couldn't be more delighted. The worst thing that could happen at this point is that they bring in a new, less dedicated director with a slashed budget just to pump the movies out. Jackson will ensure that never happens.
