If MGM are no longer going to be a distributor, then Warner should pay them a fee to distribute the film themselves. Or perhaps they could get associates to distribute the film on their behalf. If Warner are smart, they will make it a back end deal with token payment to MGM up front.

Honestly it sounds like a poor attempt at self-promotion since there is no indication the movie is actually moving along at this point.

Thanks for the pic. However, it seems strange to have Radagast in The Hobbit movie because he is only mentioned once by Gandalf, in the book.
On the other hand, Radagast actually appears in The Lord of the Rings and talks to Gandalf, in the books. He is also mentioned at the Council of Elrond. But there is no mention of Radagast in the LoTR movies. |

Sure, Radagast gets a name check from Gandalf and recognition from Beorn, but at best i don't see how this is anything other than a minor role. Anyone want to speculate on how the character could be seriously expanded on, perhaps specifically film two?

I imagine his role as a minor one in which he is present at the White Council, since it would be more interesting to have three wizards present than two. We don't exactly the make-up of the council other than Gandalf, Saruman, Galadriel, Elrond, and Cirdan; but here is a situation where Jackson could put some of other figures that get little or no attention outside of the books, such as Glorfindel, Erestor, Thranduil (Legolas' father) etc.

Depends on how much of the film deals with the White Council and the expulsion of Sauron from Dol Guldur. There's an opportunity for a bit of screen time on that topic, in such case Radagast would probably be pretty important, as he could muster the aid of many woodland animals, and turn the forest against the Dark Lord.

We need a six hour epic about the life of FEANOR!!!
Now that's a story. Hey Grand Bob: I can't think of the name of the giant spider that helps Melkor, but is it hinted at in other texts that Shelob is one of her descendants? I mean how many species of giant spiders can there be? We need a Silmarillion thread. ![]() Last edited by Riff Magnum; 08-31-2010 at 06:29 AM. |

![]() Ungoliant was her name. I cheated and looked it up on Wiki. ![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ungoliant The article and some of the links therein, claim that she had Shelob(immaculate conception or what?) and that the spiders in Mirkwood were of Shelob's brood. But it also states that the article isn't supported by enough reliable, secondary sources to be considered "concrete." I always imagined the spiders in Mirkwood to be oversized, but not giants. Maybe like the size of a huge pumpkin. |

Shelob is described vaguely enough that I have a very, very different imagining of her than what we have seen on film. That's maybe the only image in all of Tolkien's writing that isn't described in painfully explicit detail. It's too dark for Frodo to get a very good look at her.
If I get around to it, I'll post a scan of one of my drawings. |

This is what makes Tolkien so good and books so great in general. Everyone has a different interpretation. I'm going back and rereading the trilogy now, but i remember sections in the book where Tolkien basically says that Sauron knows that shelob lives in the caves and eats his orcs, but he doesn't care because she guards the pass. She would have to be pretty big to take down orcs, don't you think? |

I think she would probably be at least as big as a horse. Mirkwood spiders would also have to be pretty large, to capture all of the dwarves. I'm surprised none of them died from that; dwarves must be very hardy to survive the venom of a giant spider. |

Also, I'm pretty sure it says that Smeagol was of a people similar to Hobbits, and Tolkien makes a point of showing on numerous occassions how there is more to Hobbits than meets the eye. |
