Hard to believe that i am now more excited about the next Bond film than The Hobbit. I need some good news about the latter in the form of rock solid confirmation that Peter Jackson is directing, and this from someone who is a big fan of District 9.

See, I don't want Peter Jackson to be forced into directing this movie...because I want whose doing it to be excited to direct it, and not just do it because he doesn't have a choice. Plus, The Hobbit is a whole different feel than the LOTR books, so I think a different director would be better to give it a different feeling and tone. But that's just my opinion on the matter.

Your points are valid - despite his obvious qualifications, I would rather not have Jackson direct the movie out of a sense of obligation. Perhaps he would better serve the project as an executive producer, like Spielberg has on occasion. I don't know who the "perfect" director would be, but maybe there is someone who is at a stage similar to Jackson at the beginning of LotR: capable and empassioned, but not yet entombed into the establishment.

More Confirmation Of MGM Getting Back On Its Feet

September 15th, 2010

While we await further news of what today, 15th September 2010, has in store for MGM, it being the deadline for the studio’s sixth debt extension, there’s behind-the-scenes rumblings that seem to indicate good tidings might be on the way.

In an exclusive over at Deadline regarding a film titled “The Hunger Games” slated to go into production next year, Mike Fleming reports that director Sam Mendes (who had been tapped to direct the next film in the James Bond franchise) was one of the candidates met by studio chiefs over at Lionsgate, the producing studio for the film “The Hunger Games”. However, the report goes on to say that Sam Mendes,

“bowed out of contention last Friday… because the MGM picture is clearing up and it looks like production on 007 could begin by late summer or early fall, 2011 with Mendes at the helm and Daniel Craig back in the Aston Martin.”

It might be recalled that a couple of months ago development of the new James Bond film had been suspended indefinitely due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM. The turnaround of the Bond situation probably means good news for the Hobbit movies too.

MGM gets yet another loan extension

September 15th, 2010

Once again, reported by multiple sources, MGM’s due date for debt has been extended. Today’s September 15 has turned into tomorrow’s October 29, but that date will likely not matter either. The Hollywood reporter says:

As expected, more than 100 holders of almost $4 billion in MGM have agreed to a seventh debt forbearance agreement with the Century City-based studio. The Lion now has until Oct. 29 to pay lenders $250 million in principal and more than $450 million in owed interest.

But it’s likely the payments never will be made, as the struggling Lion is expected to creep into bankruptcy court before that with a plan for turning debt into lender equity.

This may not mean more delays for ‘The Hobbit’ as there seems to be a plan and leadership at work. As reported last week and updated in the L.A. Times blog:

MGM signed a nonbinding letter of intent with Spyglass founders Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum to take over management of the Century City-based studio. That deal must be ratified by MGM’s board of directors and more than 100 creditors, who are expected to swap their debt for equity as part of a prepackaged bankruptcy proceeding.

Stay tuned!

Good news! Not only for The Hobbit, but also for Bond. Sorry to say, Daniel Craig is the only Bond I enjoy watching. Blasphemy, I know. I just wish they would hurry up and resolve this crap so they can start production on The Hobbit. I saw LOTR: ROTK live this past weekend and I need more!

I was just thinking, but past few summers I have been looking forward to seeing LOTR live. What is there to look forward to next summer?

The eventual release of the BD EE's.

Bilbo "documented" the story in the Red Book of Westmarch. Originally, Tolkien said in the preface that he translated the story into English.

Live? How are you going to see LoTR live unless you are on drugs or experiencing some severe delusion? Is it being done as a play?

Except I saw the one in VA. Live orchestra, chorus, and singers performing the soundtrack of LOTR. They did ROTK this year (TTT last year and FOTR the year before that). Excellect performance, its just too bad they only do it four times (two in DC and two in NY).

There was a supplemental "Lord of the Rings Symphony" DVD that came with one of the EE's (can't remember which one). Howard Shore conducted the orchestra and it appeared to be a great concert. I would like to see that if it ever comes to our area.

Saw the hobbit(1977).

Not bad.

Beorn doesn't appear in the movie.
Gandalf has a huge nose.
No arkenstone.
Elrond has a beard.
Gollum looks like a huge frog/comodo dragon. lol

Still a better movie than Ralph bakshi's LOTR.

Any word on who is likely to be jumping into the director's chair? I hate to suggest such a franchise as inspiration, but Alfonso Cuaron did incredible work with Harry Potter 3 and is a cohort of Guillermo Del Toro, the perfect director to make the film. He is also a superb actors director.

Rumor mill is throwing out Neil Blomkamp and obviously Peter Jackson. Other than that, no real word on it at all

I haven't seen the 1977 Hobbit, but Beorn's exclusion would be surprising, given that an entire chapter was dedicated to him in the book, and he plays a pivotal (actually decisive) role at the end.

No arkenstone
The most valuable item of the dragon hoard and a key object that affects events at the ending of the story; a bad omission!

Elrond has a beard
I guess we can offer some forgiveness here. Tolkien writes in Unfinished Tales (the chapter on Galadriel and Celeborn) that it is a characteristic of Elves to be beardless, but in the last chapter of LotR ("The Grey Havens") he claims that Cirdan has a long beard. In Alan Lee's illustrated version of LotR (the 1991 edition), the painting in the "Council of Elrond" chapter depicts Elrond as having a beard, which I would think is a mistake.

Tolkien states in his letters that he was perturbed by frog-like portrayals of Gollum; "He was not a frog."

Couple of points: it is entirely understandable how visualists can get off track with the design of Gollum as being frog-like, when you can envision a slimey creature with wide hands and feet, massive eyes living at the bottom of a pool in a mountain.

Btw, i don't have a copy of The Hobbit to hand, but do recall that in the 1968 BBC radio dramatisation that Gandalf tells Bilbo that Elrond Half-Elven is an 'elf-friend' and i can't imagine why they would make that distinction.

Regarding director, i would imagine that the director of the film knows who he is, as it were, as why would Jackson be casting actors without the directors approval, unless the likes of Blomkamp is geuinely going to be a ghost-director on the film if Jackson is busy.

It's obviously a stretch, but some good points are made. I prefer to stay blissfully ignorant when it comes to Tom's origins.

I have a sneaking suspicion that if Tom Bombadil was the Witch King, he most likely would not have given the Ring back to Frodo. This article looks to be written by someone who believes the World Trade Center was destroyed by the U.S. Government.
