A similar "darkness problem" will be faced in Mirkwood, which is a sizable chunk of the story, and Bilbo's conversation with Smaug.

3) If they are planning on using the statues of the stone trolls from Lord of the Rings, and if so, what other props will share double duty.

4) How the White Council will be portrayed, and if it is included will Cirdan have a beard as is mentioned in the LotR chapter "The Grey Havens"?

Anyone else curious about specific scenes?
I'm not home at the moment, but I seem to remember a brief scene in LoTR showing a flashback with Gollum in the cave with the lake around him.

“The Hobbit” (finally) gets the green light!

october 15th, 2010 by altaira

a number of reliable internet sources, including thewrap.com, the la times and deadline hollywood, are reporting that “the hobbit” has finally been green lit and that filming will begin in february. from the la times:

following a multitude of delays, warner bros. And co-financing partner metro-goldwyn-mayer inc. Have agreed to start production in february on the two films that serve as a prequel to the blockbuster “lord of the rings” trilogy, people familiar with the situation said.

all reports emphasized that there are still hurdles to overcome, such as the labor union issues that surfaced in the last month or so. However, this news will hopefully help emphasize the urgency of resolving those issues. To be sure, the news is a big boost for hobbit and tolkien fans everywhere!

Right after the greelight was announced they also announced that Peter Jackson is definitely directing. Let's hope the labor disputes can be solved by February and that Martin Freeman can somehow get into a pair of Hobbit feet. So good to see that it's finally a go.

Cirdan didn't have a beard in Return of the King in his small cameo, I guess we'll see there.

The trolls are alive and well most of the time we'd see them in The Hobbit so maybe they'll be sure and have them end in the same position to keep continuity. Will be interesting to see.

Scenes in total darkness that you spoke of will likely still have some of that low eerie light employed throughout LOTR, you know that bluish tinted ambient light.

Biggest ? for me is Saruman if they choose to show him, Christopher Lee has said that he is too old to make the trip to NZ to film so would they shoot his scenes in England? Digitally add his face in?

I also have a hard time seeing them keeping Bilbo knocked out during the battle of the five armies, major battle scene and the viewers link to the story is out cold, who then gives us a reference point? I would welcome that particular change, as well as expanding the rold of Bard, Thranduil etc.

Going to be interesting to see which dwarves get the bigger speaking roles and which are reduced to bit players. Man, can't wait to hear some casting news.

BREAKING NEWS: The Hobbit has finally been given the greenlight and will be made in 3-D with Sir Peter Jackson in the director's chair.

Shooting will begin in February.

The announcement was made today jointly by New Line Cinema - which bankrolled The Lord of the Rings - and its parent company Warner Bros.

The announcement did not state whether the two part prequel to The Lord of the Rings would be shot in New Zealand.

Members of New Zealand actors' union Equity are refusing to participate in The Hobbit until they meet with its producers. The producers have refused to meet and Jackson has said the film may be forced to be shot in another country.

It had been widely speculated that Jackson would direct after Mexican film-maker Guillermo del Toro quit as director in May due to delays on starting date for The Hobbit, in part due to financial problems with one of its backers, MGM.

There had also been speculation that the two part film would be shot in 3-D.

Both parts wold be made "using the latest camera and stereo technology to create a high quality, comfortable viewing experience", the studios said.

The two part film is expected to cost about US$500 million (NZ$660 m) to make.

“Exploring Tolkien’s Middle-earth goes way beyond a normal film making experience” Jackson said, "It’s an all-immersive journey into a very special place of imagination, beauty and drama.

"We’re looking forward to re-entering this wondrous world with Gandalf and Bilbo - and our friends at New Line Cinema, Warner Brothers and MGM”.

“There is no human being on the planet as qualified as Peter Jackson to direct these films,” said Warner Bros president Alan Horn.

“Peter is incredibly talented and has the creative vision and experience to bring this beloved property to life in a way that no other film-maker could.

And the team of Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have proven through their work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy that no one is more skilled at transforming Tolkien's written words into a vibrant, living language that makes the audience believe they are not merely visiting Middle Earth, but actually living in it.

"We couldn’t be more thrilled and look forward to seeing The Hobbit take shape under Peter’s stewardship and the team he is putting together.”

“Peter is a filmmaker of incomparable ability; having him return to Middle-earth to produce and direct is a dream come true. A true original, Jackson is a gifted story-teller, visionary director and pioneer in film technology,” said New Line Cinema president Toby Emmerich.

“Reuniting with Peter, Fran and Philippa on truly makes it feel like we are going ‘there and back again.’”

I'll respectfully disagree with the excitement of a 3D shoot for these films. Some movies shouldn't be done in 3D and this is one of them. In fact if it turns out to be true I'll be very disappointed.

So sick of the 3D fad.

I'm with you. I did see Avatar in 3D, but to me it wasn't any better than watching it on my home theater. I'm holding out for a holodeck.

On the other hand, If it is just there, and not in-your-face-gimmicky, it could work. I saw Superman Returns in 3D in IMAX, and the scene at the barn was done almost perfectly. Just added that other dimension. That's all I want in 3D, not stuff poking in my face. I grew up getting enough of that on SCTV. Just add the third dimension. You don't throw things at me in a 2D movie, so don't throw stuff at me in 3D. Compose it just like you would in 2D, just film it in 3D.

That is exactly how I feel about it. We don't need gimmicks. I really like the depth that it adds; no need to have stuff flying at me. Depth is going to be really awesome in forest scenes.

Easy solution. Vote with your money and go to the 2D showings.
