We saw brief flashbacks of the original encounter between Bilbo and Gollum in Peter Jackson’s original Tolkien films. (One wonders if, after the Hobbit films are out, the relevant flashbacks in The Lord of the Rings will be replaced with footage from the newer films.)

They're going all out trying to get everyone they can back from Lord of the Rings. This is my favorite book in the series, glad to see it's all finally coming together

That's what I'm thinking too! Very good news indeed! I'm glad they're trying to get Ian Holm back as well for the bookend scenes. This is getting better and better

Looks like David Tennant may be up for the role of Thranduil the Elvenking which I hope is true as he's one of my favorite actors.

THR is reporting that Ian McKellan has officially signed on to reprise his Gandalf role in THE HOBBIT as well as Andy Serkis apparently confirming his role as Gollum (via Deadline). Keep in mind there is no confirmation from Serkis yet, but this eventuality has always been a slam dunk.

Warner Bros. is now fully financing THE HOBBIT(s) and will be distributing the movies worldwide.

THE HOBBIT starts lensing in New Zealand on February 14 and I WILL have exclusive updates for you from my embedded sources! That's a slam dunk too :-)

I think he's a good actor, but Thranduil is Legolas' father. I just don't know if he would work as Legolas' dad. I personally think Bill Nighy would be perfect.

Well, keep in mind that elves dont' really age once they hit adulthood. So Legolas' father doesn't have to look older than him necessarily.

Yeah, I know that, I've read The Silmarillion,The Hobbit,& LOTR, plus many other Tolkien books dozens of times. (I'm near the end of the Fellowship right now.) That has been a bed time ritual for nearly 25 years, I read Tolkien almost every night right before sleep.

I'm just saying from a film making stanpoint, it would make more sense to the millions of people who don't know that. Also, I just think Bill Nighy seems much more "kingly". I couldn't imagine a better choice for Thranduil. That's just kind of how I always pictured him when reading the book. I think David Tennant is a great actor, but him as Legolas' dad just seems almost silly to me.

EDIT: From what I remember, some elves always appear younger, some middle aged, and some old. Cirdan the shipwright appeared old, and even had a beard, which is very rare for an elf. I think the age they mature to has to do with their personality, maybe.

Slowly but surely, Peter Jackson has managed to secure the return of the majority of the major stars from The Lord of the Rings franchise for his soon to be shooting prequel, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Sir. Christopher Lee had been in talks to reprise his role as the wizard Saruman and it now looks certain, providing that he is in good health, that he will be appearing in the movie.

I think when I finally see a trailer for this, I may geek out and get misty eyed. It's been nearly 10 years since the last LOTR film. Seeing all those familiar faces in familiar settings after all these years will be strong stuff.

I didn't realize how long it had been until you brought that up! Man that makes me feel old...I remember seeing all 3 of them in theaters multiple times and watching the Academy Awards and writing a report on it winning its award in middle school...Wow. It has really been a while
