Tobey Maguire is Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit"?

About a months ago, Tobey Maguire stated that he and director Guillermo Del Toro have been planning something for the near future. This sparked rumors that the actor may star as Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit" prequels. But two days later Maguire took his statement back by saying that his words were misconstrued.

At the time it wasn't clear how Maguire would be able to take the Bilbo role considering that he had to begin work on "Spider-Man 4." But now that the superhero movie has fallen apart, the actor is once again being named as the lead in "The Hobbit."

"I have been personally told by a source very close to Guillermo del Toro that it's true... Tobey Maguire IS The Hobbit," said AMC's John Campea. A bit later, The Sun confirmed the rumor after getting in touch with its own sources.

Hmm. Interesting but not completely unexpected. I am not a big fan of Tobey so I hope he impresses me by going outside his usual characters.

I figured. I like Tobey, but in no way is he right for the part of Bilbo. Just tabloids taking advantage of the Spidey 4 news. I'm still hoping they can find someone who can naturally channel Ian Holm to at least some degree.

Though still a rumor, I think that all the coverage and media surrounding this has some truth to it, and I don't know what to think about it. However, if it is true, I will definitely give him a chance. I can still remember when people were whining about Heath Ledger portraying the Joker and look how that turned out.

The Hobbit Pushed Back to 4th Quarter 2012?

In an article at Variety talking about New Line Cinema, which two years ago became a unit under Warner Bros. Pictures, studio executive Alan Horn reveals that the first of the two Hobbit films may not hit theaters until late 2012, a full year after the previously-announced December 2011 release:

Once the script for the second film is in -- Jackson and his longtime collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are working on it with Del Toro -- New Line will work up a budget for both films and start casting. New Line exec Michael Disco, who was once Emmerich's assistant, will oversee for the studio.

Horn won't predict when the first of the two "Hobbit" films will be out, but says the most probable scenario would be a release in the fourth quarter of 2012.

"It's a big bet for us. But it's one we think will pay off given the success of 'Lord of the Rings,'" says Emmerich. "This is one of the few movies it feels like people are waiting for."

New Line's original plan was to release the first film in December 2011, followed by the second one in December 2012. One reason for the delay may be the restructuring of MGM, which shares the financing rights with New Line for the "Hobbit" films. MGM is currently accepting bids for the studio and those rights may go to another studio (Warner Bros. is said to be one of the bidders).

That is disappointing news

I like that the guy said The Hobbit is one of the few movies people are anticipating when there are over a dozen highly anticipated films for the next 2-3 years.

Now the BURNING question is...When are the 'Extended Cuts' for the LotRs films going to be released because of this delay?

You're welcome. I too am wondering when the EE's of LotR will be released. If The Hobbit is really pushed back until December of 2012, I would hope that the EE's will be relesed no later than a year after the TE's (in other words April 2011). However, I wouldn't be surprised if they get released for the holidays of 2010. One can only hope, anyways.

I'm not surprised this has been pushed to December. It would be nice if the EE's came out before the release of the Hobbit and included movie cash. We may not get it until 2013..

Has there been any series news about actual contenders for the role of Bilbo Baggins, rather than the rampant fanboy speculation (David Tennant, Toby Macquire etc)? My personal choice would be scottish actor Angus Macfadyen, known from Braveheart and Equilibrium to name a couple. Bilbo needs to look like he is at least in his late thirties or early forties.

You'll remember a few months back a rumour surfacing that Tobey Maguire was up for the role of young Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo Del Toro's "Hobbit" films. Maguire's publicist was quick to debunk the rumours... But everyone seems convinced that "Spider-Man" is in the mix (especially now that he's got some spare time).

And if it's true that Maguire's still a possibility, then that's two superheroes up for Bilbo : "Watchmen" star Matthew Goode tells The Daily Telegraph he auditioned for the role of the young Hobbit, too.

Personally, I like Maguire better.
