He's only 71.
I don't think he looks that bad, just a little scruffy!

Oh my god! He looks pretty frail. They need to hurry up and get his shots filmed first. Luckily filming starts tomorrow!

The shire is built, the Hobbits have arrived, and production of one of the biggest films ever to be made in New Zealand is set to begin tomorrow.

Lee is the only cast member to have met Tolkien. IIRC he also sat in on some of C.S. Lewis' lectures.

The man is a LOTR scholar. He knows more about those books than anyone on set and possibly anyone anywhere, and he kept Jackson in check on a few occassions. Plus, he has read the books once a year since their publications. It would be a shame if he doesn't get to see these released.

A few too little if you ask me as almost all of his scenes bare very little resemblance to the ones in the books.

Maybe Lee did understand that novel and movie are two very different things?

I meant in general. In the EE special features Jackson mentions that Lee always had the books on set and would reference them constantly. He would reference lines and actions, and use them to stay true to the actions and spirit of the characters and the origonal intent of Tolkien. This is more important in an adaption than a carbon copy of the book. He had Jackson change small things in the sctipt on more than one occasion.

True, but think what Duffy tried to say is that it was done in a shallow way.LotR movies are popcorn movies,so unlike the source material. A good example of a successful adaptation is the way Kubrick adapted books.Read the book 'Dr.Strangelove' is based upon, and it is just another dime a dozen story, but he took it and made it radically different.Clockwork orange is based on a very good book, and it was ported playing on cinematography's strongpoints.Same with LA confidential.Book and movie has different style, but either is good on their own accord.LotR is a very good book-IMO and others-but the movies trivialized the content and characters in it.Respect people liking them since they are visually very good, but they are not good movies.

btw:duffy, sorry to put words in your mouth

Uhm, Kubrick did stray from the source novels more often than not, so they're just as unlike the source material as the Lord of the Rings movies (perhaps even more). That's not to say that they were bad movies, in most cases they even improved on the novels they were based on, but like I said earlier "Maybe Lee did understand that novel and movie are two very different things?".

Yea, my meaning was pretty much in dealing with Jackson and fellow screenwriters frequent liberties/changes to the story and it's characters, however this has pretty much been discussed in great detail recently, so lets get to some...

Kiwi Actors Jeffrey Thomas and Mike Mizrahi Cast As Thror and Thrain?

March 20th, 2011 by Earl | Source: Stuff.co.nz

It’s the 21st of March down in New Zealand (or Middle-earth, depending on how geeky you are!), and reporting on the much-anticipated start of filming today, stuff.co.nz mentions something very interesting regarding casting.

There have been several casting announcements since Martin Freeman was confirmed as the lead in October last year. Yesterday Warner Bros. named Kiwi actors Jeffrey Thomas and Mike Mizrahi for the roles of dwarf kings Thror and Thrain.

No wind of this casting announcement has reached the rest of the interweb yet. So only time can prove the veracity of this story. In the meantime, the rest of the article also includes some more interesting information. It goes on to state that:

Now, on the first day of filming, Jackson has revealed a sneak peek inside the new Bag End, the home of lead hobbit Bilbo Baggins. The photo of Jackson stepping through the front door of Baggins’ fictional home in The Shire was the only photograph issued by Warner Brothers yesterday, part of strict secrecy surrounding the film.

Keep your eyes on TheOneRing.net as we dig for more on these news stories. If you have any leads or pictures, feel free to send them in to spymaster@theonering,net

If Lee did keep Jackson in check a few times, I shudder to think what the script would have been like if Lee had not.

"PRODUCTION BEGINS IN NEW ZEALAND ON THE HOBBIT, PETER JACKSON’S TWO FILM EPIC ADAPTATION OF J.R.R. TOLKIEN’S TIMELESS CLASSIC

In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit…

Wellington, NZ, March 21, 2011—Production has commenced in Wellington, New Zealand, on “The Hobbit,” filmmaker Peter Jackson’s two film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s widely read masterpiece.

“The Hobbit” is set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

The two films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, will be shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming will take place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

“The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers."
