Then I moved onto opening The Patriot case. Of course there were 3 stickers on this one: Top, side, and bottom. The top wasn't too bad (though it was still a bit too "sticky" than necessary. The side and bottom ones are always the worse though. STOP PUTTING STICKERS THERE! The stickers just don't want to come off because half of it is being stuck to the clear-plastic that the sleeves are inserted behind. The goo sticks to that transparency too much.
Then tell the thieves to stop stealing discs. Seriously.

I used to be a video buyer, and I could steal a DVD with only the smallest penetration of the shrinkwrap, so little that people would never notice.

The 3 stickers stop that technique VERY effectively.

As far as Fox goes, logic would dictate that they're simply testing out their new BD+'d discs to make sure they work with all current models. Work out the bugs and all that.

My friend, I think you already stick your neck out far enough just with Sony marketing people with title information.

Pretty much all we need is something like "we'll start releasing X Month" or "we will have an an announcement in X Month".

Hello Paidgeek:

First of all I would like to thank you for your invaluable contribution to this and other forums. Your input means a lot for the community.

This being said, I would like to ask whether or not you are aware if there are any foreign-language productions being planned for release? I have joined the BLU team precisely because of the wider variety of foreign-language cinema (the presence of Almodovar's VOLVER in particular was enough of a reason, one of many to be exact, to support the format) and would love to see more foreign titles coming out.

Also, there is a legion of very serious fans, with an enormous buying power, who need a "reason" to join the war, and the reason as you could guess is...foreign cinema (a quick look at the criterion forum and the ongoing discussions there regarding BLU/HD reveals plenty). You want to gain substantial support in this war-expand in the direction mentioned above. There would be immediate results.

This being said...any news for possible foreign releases on the horizon?

Thanks in advance for considering my question(s).

Thanks for supporting the format.

"Run Lola Run" is presently scheduled for January, "Das Boot" for February.

As the members here will tell you, the schedule changes from time to time, so these may be moved to another date.

That is great to see. Lola is a must have and I would love to see Das Boot in HD also.

Thanks for the heads up and your continued support for our forum.

Thank you for info ! (it' nice to have same audio depth 24bit dolbyTrueHD at least on UK edition not like pirates ), you know I was ready to order the US version, but region coding on third one put me back on the track for UK version (I wan same audio and video specs, and I am not sure if Slovakia/Czech republic will get same specs). I am not worried about any dubs or subtitles, just want BEST VIDEO AND AUDIO.

Thank you again for your time !

best regards from Slovakia
Marek

I hope that they realize that by not releasing they could be putting themselves in a position of having less effective copy protection in the future. Just for the sake of argument, let's say that BD+ is not as effective as they would like, but is mildly effective. For this example, on average it gives a 2 week window after launch day for a title where the pirates can't get to the content. In that case I fear that one possibility is:

1. Fox decides this isn't enough copy protection for them.
2. HD DVD wins (or ties) largely due to lack of support from Fox for Blu-ray.
3. Time marches on and high definition on discs becomes more popular.
4. Fox ends up in much the same situation that they did with DVD and its broken copy protection where the only smart business choice they have is to release movies on HD DVD.

In the above scenario they would have made their own bed and not only lost the little bit of help from BD+, but the advantage of the BD ROM-Mark and the ability to region encode their content.

I hope that Fox considers this and that if they want Blu-ray to win, then they may have to do something to help bring that about. Sacrificing some in the short run to gain in the long run can be good business in a lot of cases and to me, this looks like one of those cases. I would love to sit in on some marketing meetings at Fox, but I have a hard time believing that letting Blu-ray go it alone without Fox's help is what I would vote for if I was an employee at Fox getting paid to look out for their interests.

Penton-Man,

It would be nice if you could at least find out and pass on whether they will do day-and-date releases. Even without BD+ I think there is a good chance that studios lose more by missing a day-and-date than they do to the compromised copy protection of these high definition formats at this point. Many of us don't buy DVDs anymore and by the time a release comes out later we may be onto other things (unless it is a title we really care a lot about), while others who do buy the lower priced DVD won't buy an HD version later.

And I mentioned this one before, but I hope that MGM (and Fox being their distributor) will bring Rescue Dawn to Blu-ray even without a big box office. Looks like something that could gain an audience if done right.

Default Cthd?

I've searched the board and can't find any recent information on when Sony will finally release Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The announcement and withdrawl of titles is one of the most frustrating things about both HD formats and this title was supposed to be released ages ago. What's the status?

Not exactly the same thing here Gascat. Rescue Dawn is directed by the great Werner Herzog based on his documentary. So it's less of a flag waving, popcorn munching, Owen Wilson action piece and more about the drama.

Smile hi

Thanks all you insiders into some major points i was hoping you would answer, and you did. What i am asking is, with listening and watching John Legend in concert as one of my first bluray music discs, which totally blew me away! What else is on the cards for release, and are we going to see some major re-releases of megastars such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Mariah , etc etc, as i would love to see some huge talent showing on this blu ray format! for me Michael Jacksons stuff was made for blu ray, i would love to see his concerts on BLURAY!

Thatnks for that heads up! I was just watching Das Boot on TV thinking how great it would be on BD. I still have my 2 tape VHS version.

All MJ's concerts from his good years were shot on SD video.

Despite the superb efforts of Sony and Disney, it is essential that FOX get back into the ring and deliver that knockout punch to HD-DVD.

paidgeek,

Some disturbing information. This is regarding Sony new players, may be you can shed some light:

According to SS Scott, moderator at the Roxio forums, what's happening behind the scenes may not be good for us.

There are two types of BD authoring, BDAV (no menus, no interactive) and BDMV (interactive with menus).

BDAV authoring was intended for users to burn their personal HD content like camcorder footage onto BD-R/RE media, and the interactive format BDMV was Hollywood's format intended for BD-ROM. But outside of Hollywood people want to author menus and interactivity just like on DVD, which requires the BDMV structure.

The problem is that an illegal ripped copy from BD-ROM looks the same as legal BDMV authored for BD-R/RE, so under studio pressure, namely Sony, the simple fix is to disable BD-R/RE playback. While some first generation Sony Blu-Ray players added BD-R/RE playback in a firmware update, the newest 2nd generation Sony player the BDP-S300 has eliminated it. Speculation is that future firmware updates may retroactively disable BD-R/RE playback on other players, even the PS3.

It is speculation yes, but it comes from a good source.

Needless to say, it's confusing and disappointing, and puts Blu-Ray authoring onto BD-R/RE media into a state of uncertainty.

I honestly have a problem with Blu-Ray on this point. I'm saying nothing to champion the HD DVD cause, other than to express the reason for my current lean in that direction centers on this issue alone. Blu-Ray is gaining momentum. As your collective voices call out for the death of HD DVD, I beseech the Blu-Ray supporters to insist upon a writable format, lest there be a time you want one and don't have it.
