Paid, could you kindly explain why the US and UK versions of Underworld are different, (Uk Mpeg 2, US mpeg 4)? The UK version is quite poor where as the US version is stunning. Whats the score?

quick question to any insider that can answer there.

Since the announcment that XBOX 360 will be adding more codecs like xvid and divx, will the ps3 add these codecs aswell.

Also will there be a feature in the future to back up dvds to the hd and have some kind of front end to view cover art and play them. Kind of like a Kialidascape system.

thanks

You mean Kaleidoscope?

Blu-ray and HD-DVD spec has a feature called Managed Copy and Mandatory Managed Copy. If and when it's implemented, you can store (not backup) your BDs on your server. Start building those RAID systems.

Any insider gained any ground in getting Lionsgate, Fox and Disney reps to participate here?

Is this correct. I may have to cancel the UK version and order the US version then.

M6 is releasing in December in France the two Underworld as a double feature (both films on one BD-50). The first one is the director's cut and is apparently encoded in AVC. I have no idea for the codec used for the second one.

Did France use your video encodes, or they did them on their own?

Is it possible to have two main features with two different codecs on the same disc, or the licensing agreements for the codecs and other technical issues would discourage such an option?

Which leads me to the final question: when you do video encodes in the US for pictures for which you do not have worldwide rights (for instance the Resident Evil movies), do you contact local distributors and pitch your encode for a reasonable fee -- assuming the allocation is correct and there are no censorship issues?

Can it also happen the other way around? I don't have to remind you that the Blu-ray of Starship Troopers is already available here (through BVHE), do I?

No, he means Kaleidescape. You need to see this in action to really understand it. Fantastically cool system, though it's also fantastically expensive.

See if you can catch a demo somewhere. You will be impressed.

I imagine by the end of January 2009, when Paramount/Dreamworks begins releasing on Blu-ray again, joining Universal who make the announcement at the same time, acknowledging the massive sales lead Blu-ray has in standalone players and disc sales, the format war will be announced as concluded.

That is the absolute LONGEST I see it taking.

I hope it's over way before then.

Dear paidgeek,

I just received "Surf's Up" and found it to be the first title to feature an icon for PS3 users to see on their menu.

This is a very nice little touch and highly appreciated.

btw outstanding PQ and SQ with Surf's Up - Kudos to SPE once again...

Paid: I just watched my copy of A Few Good Men; I'd forgotten how great the movie is, and it looked fantastic. Thanks for all the hard work!

Managed copy is not a full-on copy. Almost definately it will be implemented as a no more than DVD res copy that you can stick on a server or an iPod. A device that would have to support the specific DRM and be authorized over the net like iTunes.

According to Highdef Digest, Paprika will be in MPEG4 in the US. The France and Japan version are both MPEG2...

Universal will move to BR before Jan 09. Paramount is questionable however I have to believe they went over that contract with a fine tooth comb and have the ability to get out of it with HD performace issues.

In addition to performance issues I believe there's probably a notwithstanding clause having something to do with either Universal going neutral or Warner going Blu-exclu that too.

Hi Paid, like another member asked, any news on PS3 supporting other codecs with newer firmware, like xvid divx? Thanks.

Default To Paidgeek re: PS3 request

Paidgeek would it be possible to request support for ntfs format support for addon drives instead of fat32 only.

Hold on there; managed copy is simply a program that allows the end user to make a copy (backup, alternative use, etc) that still has DRM attached to prevent infinite use (and illegal sharing, etc). It certainly can include a full resolution file, although it may not (depending on the implimentation).

Also, the Millenial digital copyright act tried to dance around the issue of fair use, but the Supreme Court has been pretty consistent in allowing consumers to back up the media they purchase, so it seems to me likely that managed copy on any format will eventially allow full-res versions, lest consumers be allowed to hack their legally purchased software to make a personal backup.
