Well we all know that it is going to happen some day.
Right ?
And on forum.blu-ray.com you all have insiders that make statements like this…….

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=3781

Rather than insiders that qualify their statements and (just in case ) hedge their bets by saying things like…..”Could he still be right? The odds are very well stacked against him…..”

From………..
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1341

Or pseudo-insiders that have to call someone to see what’s up…….
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1346

You guys heard about the Target announcement, the Blockbuster announcement, the Nickerson thing, etc. here first-- rather than anywhere else on the internet so stay tuned to this forum in the coming weeks and months for any exclusive Blu-ray happenings.

Seriously though, I will tell you that ever since the Paramount pay-off went down all studios that are not fully committed to one format have been courted and continue to be courted more vigorously than ever before.

I usually don't post on here (INSIDER'S THREAD), but I do read from time to time. Thank you for a straight forward answer on this one.

Seriously, Penton. How many more studios that are "not fully committed" are there? Of course, I'm leaving the porn and indies behind. Magnolia Pictures? New Line?

Penton, can we get somebody from PHL to come provide tidbits for us for upcoming and announced titles that they author? Since paidgeek is doing his part for SPHE, might as well ask for PHL's contribution since nobody from Disney or Fox wants to chat.

This is what is sad. ALL studios including Sony should support both formats until there is a clear winner. If this were to be the case, this ridiculous war would be over long ago and Blu Ray would be the winner. Instead we have this grade school playground fight which isn't benefitting anyone.

I wasn't going to bring that one up, but since YOU did...

That was THE best comment I read anywhere yesterday. For a person who last year was basically speaking on WBs behalf (we all remember the FUD he spread after CES06 re WB, right?) and played up a close relationship with WB...he certainly wasn't 100% sure of it yesterday, was he? Nickerson gone? Change in the wind over at WB? I don't expect you'll be able to tell us...

Nevertheless, as Emmit Smith said on the football pre-game last Sunday AM, "A leopard doesn't change his stripes."

I am the project manager for the unit that has the Blu-ray drive. We have made some prototypes, but we are running into issues with Windows XP-embedded OS and reading data from the various media types. It appears that both the BD-R and BD-RE disks must be formatted first, before Windows "sees" them. We can burn these disks with Nero-7, but cannot read BD-ROM (movies) with it. What do we need to know about moving data off of BD disks in the XP environment (I doubt Microsoft will assist me)? What is the best software to use to read data off of the various BD disks?

Also, although I started with it, I couldn't use the BW-100 Sony drive (tray-load), as it was too big, so I had to go with the Panasonic UJ-215, Slimline. Who can I contact at Panasonic about this drive (connectors used, etc.)? Thanks for your help!
I'm not a BD insider, but I played with BD burners for a long time. (1) Don't format BD-R. (2) BD-RE doesn't need formatting, it can be reused again. (3) When I added a BD burner to my XP machines, it is recognized immediately, even BD-ROM data can be read (but it is scrambled). You don't have to do anything.

The UJ215 looks like a std laptop IDE optical drive form factor. If so, one of these should work for you.

Paid,

Does Blu-ray allow for encoding anamorphic 480i/p widescreen clips like SD DVD? In other words, if a studio wanted to publish 16 hours of widescreen 720x480 material anamorphically encoded, so that it's not letterboxed on widescreen TV sets in Blu-ray (straight port of SD DVD boxset content to fit on single Blu-ray disc, ie. 10 SL DVD in 1 BD50 or Blu-ray as DVD player with 50GB capacity), could that be done? If so, can that be done using any codec, MPEG-2, VC-1, or AVC and will it play properly (in widescreen and not letterboxed) on any Blu-ray player?

Thank you,

I disagree. If all studios released on both formats, the cheaper format would win. The vast majority of consumers don't have the equipment to tell the difference, thus we'd all have the inferior quality of HD-DVD forced on us. It's only because of Blu-ray's superior studio support, and the PS3, that it's the dominant format.

And the playground fight is benefiting one party - Microsoft. They want to delay adoption of a new physical HD media so people will turn to Live downloads. That's the reason they propped up HD-DVD when Toshiba was just about ready to join Blu-ray. If not for Microsoft, there never would have been a format war.

Yes, but it would never be done except on bargain basement stuff. Percieved value vs required SRP. Market research tells us that more discs= perception of something being worth more to people. You can just throw the DVD encodes right on there though, but even if it were done at some point 10-15 years down the line they'd still split it between 2 BD-25s.

I'm curious because I am not sure whether I've ever seen anamorphically encoded widescreen 480P on either Blu-ray or HD DVD. Because these new formats are inherently widescreen, I wonder if anamorphic encoding with 480i/p content is even possible.

You're watching recycled extras done in 4:3 that's why

It's absolutely possible

I think i've seen both 480x720 4:3 coded and 16:9 coded

they're not doing it as 480x656 or 480x875

Blu ray disc is a storage medium, so if it can be put on disc, it can be done on BD disc.

To the insiders:
For people reading this forum the Blu-ray picture and sound quality is the selling point but...
one big advantage of Blu-ray disks is the scratch proof coating. Many parents with little children get many ruined (unplayable) disks. (My daughter stuck with VHS tapes for many years because of this.) An advertising campaign comparing Blu-ray to standard DVD and HD-DVD showing the benefits of this coating would get a lot of people to purchase Blu-ray.

Now available on scratch-resistant Disney Blu-ray.

The scratch resistant coating is actually a pretty good selling point IMO. I got a big shipment of BDs not that long ago, and among them were a couple of floaters. Usually with DVDs when that happens they'll be pretty badly scratched up, and I'll be lucky if they play. With BDs however there wasn't a single visible scratch on them.

geek-man ,

Don't fret. Big fan of this movie as you know (). There are those of us who greatly appreciate the effort that went into this title (even though I don't have it yet). Like I said on some of the forums as people trashed this release: You guys did a new transfer, and some changes were approved/made by the filmmaker and his company. That's all we can reasonably ask of SPHE.

When I sit down next week to watch this, I assure you that I will be engrossed in the movie...knowing that I am seeing it as intended, accurate to the creators' vision(s), and receiving the benefit of everyone's hard work at AZ and SPHE.

-Esox

PS: We're closing in on Spiderman too. Cannot wait for that Trilogy!!!

I think a lot of this is due to a lack of understanding, which you are clearing up now.

WAY too often people start complaining based on second-hand information. "Everyone knows" squat.

I've got it on pre-order, and I'm looking forward to seeing it. Most of us can't comment until we do see it.
