I don't know about the HD-DVD experience, but I watched the blu-ray version of RETURN TO HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL last night, and I found the response time on my PS3 extraordinarly fast, honestly it felt almost instant, and about as seamless as you can get with the menu-driven structure that is used to watch that version of the movie.

Okay, this seems the perfect time to ask (and since my girlfiend is Russian), how come it seems that Russian subtitles are never offered?

I would have bought the explanation that there was too much bootlegging going on in Russia, but that was also true in some Asian locales and yet we are now offering Chinese and Japanese subtitles.

You can think of it that way, but the technical details are more complicated...

The short answer is that this disc is supposed to be sold in Asia, but not Russia.

To my knowledge, nothing has changed with respect to bitstream output over HDMI with the 40/80GB product.

I had thought that he “retired” , is this one of those markrubin *retirements* ?
Anyway, thanks for the clarification, I’m not surprised but, in a sense I’m glad that it isn’t some other insider jumping on Richard.

I really wonder what would happen if another independent producer comes onto the AVS forum and even gives the perception that something that Blu-ray does/offers is superior to what HD DVD offers.

So sad………Richard is really passionate about his work, makes peanuts on the high-def stuff and gets grief for all his effort.

paidgeek, are you sure that HD DVD can't do seamless?

I suspect HD DVD also can do at least the spec. stand point, since every DL titles are splitted in 2 parts at the layer change point and connected seamlessly, also top menu movie loops seamlessly, same as BD. My understanding is that clips can be played seamlessly if all clips are designated in a playlist, and clips are MUXed with proper seamless conditions, with consideration of which clips are connected each other, just as same as BD and DVD.

Challenging point is, I think, that whether the authoring tool can MUX clips for seamless branching (like director's cut ver./ theatrical ver.) or multi-angle with proper condition. BD tool already proved it can do those, but HD DVD's one is unknown so far.

Selecting non-default story causes change of the playlist, unless all stories are authored as a multi-angle which limits all of clips in the angle must have exactly same run time. Change of the playlist causes pause.

Just tried the new Spiderman 2 BD in the Samsung BDP-1400. At the first branching point at the end of chapter 2, the player hard-locks with a black screen. Only powering down then back up can get the player to respond. Selecting chapter 3 from the "scenes" menu give normal playback until the next branch point. Same thing.

Will be interested if others encounter same problem.

BTW, the PS3 plays it fine.

Robert George posted this in the AVSforum. I'm wondering if we'll see similar issues with the other standalone players. Perhaps someone can pass the info on to the appropriate people so a firmware fix can get issued quickly?

Penton, why don't you challenge Amir to a sound-off?

Quick question: Do the BD studios get together and strategize on which movies to release during this early period of the roll out of BD?

I ask because there doesn't appear to be much thought put into making BD the next format for optical disks by some studios.

I just had the misfortune of attempting to watch the BD release of 28 Days Later.
I thought I was going blind or my equipment took its last breath.
Popped in the DVD and couldn't tell the difference in VQ.
After some investigation, I discovered this movie was shot with a cheap DV camera and CAN'T look any better.

Uhhh....and this is going to win BD converts...how???

I'm sorry, but this is no way to win a Format War fight to the death.

I realize Fox has been BD-challenged in the past...
However, this type of incompetency shouldn't be overlooked; either play to win or get the out of the game and let the grown-up people play.

The release of 28 Days Later was specifically timed with the release of 28 Weeks Later. I would have to disagree with you on one point: By releasing these two films simultaneously, Fox has allowed consumers to build a complete collection of these films in HD and that indicates to me that a lot of thought was put into the decision. Once consumers are able to build a film COLLECTION on BD, they will be much more comfortable in abandoning DVD. Much like Sony has done with their pending release of the entire Spiderman trilogy. While the video of 28 days looks a little rough, it is presented precisely how it was intended to be seen. Make no mistake, no DVD could even come close to the look of 28 Days Later on BD. The sound alone is worth the upgrade.

Preserving the Director's intent and accuracy to the source are vital in making BD a dominant format. We have seen the idiotic reprecussions of uninformed zealots who somehow think that their idea of what HD should look like somehow trumps the artistic intent of the filmmakers. Hopefully for every fool who thinks Dracula was flawed, there are a dozen people out there who truly understand the complexities and beauty of what film really is. BD is the only format that has the capability to truly make that a reality.

The BD version of 28 Days Later is the best version of that movie you can buy. Even if the source material doesn't reach all the potential quality of the container, why would a film enthusiast settle for less? 1080p BD is better than PAL DV, so the PAL DV "fits" easily and you get the multichannel HD sound and 35mm finale too. It's not that 28 D looked any better in the theater and that the BD failed to replicate the way it looks. Not everything on BD has to be noiseless pure 16:9 1080p CGI renders with 7.1 multichannel sound. Like saying She Loves You should not be released on a high definition format because it's final master is full of splices and only monaural.

What can studios get together and talk about within the BDA?

28 Days Later was shot in DV. I think it's PAL DV which has 720x576, still far from HD res. I'm struggling with the idea of buying it just to complete a collection, but so far, I'm going to skip it.

Thumbs down

To any Blu-Ray Insiders,

There are currently rumours, strong rumours, of Toshiba working with Microsoft on an Xbox Entertainment Box, a 360 with built in HD-DVD. It will be a while, most likely late 08/early 09 but I hope the BDA/Sony are aware of this and maybe are able to counter.

It seems MS will stop at nothing to screw Sony, and if the format war isnt over by that time (which it most likely wont be) this could cause some trouble for Blu-Ray.

I understand the BD Insiders most likely cant comment on this.

Thank you.
