I found a nice booklet on BD prepared by BVHE at BJ's . A preloaded Blu-ray version of this booklet plus the split-screen simulation would be perfect for new-in-box PS3. It could be put on PSN for existing PS3 owners. |

A lot? every survey and poll indicates over 90% have HDTV's. Even MS did a survey and came up with very high HDTV ownership levels for the x360. I find it hard to believe the PS3 is any different - you buy it because you have a HD TV.

Paidgeek:
My question has to do with the marketing of Blu-ray movies. I have noticed that recent TV commercials of new Blu-ray releases indicated something to the effect of "Available Tuesday on DVD and Blu-ray High Definition". The same thing is in print: "Blu-ray High Definition". What is the thinking behind this (if you know)? Personally I think it is more confusing that it is explanatory. People might think that the movie being promoted is actually on Blu-ray and HD-DVD! I don't think it is necessary to try to "explain" in a 2 second blurb that Blu-ray is "high definition". I believe that the term "Blu-ray" is very catchy, and a "new" term....which makes it more "hip" than something like "HD-DVD" which includes reference to the "old" (not "hip") DVD format. Adding "high definition" to the end of "Blu-ray" almost seems to defeat the purpose of having a distinct name for the format. It just seems it would make more sense to just concentrate on the Blu-ray name as much as possible, without qualification or explanation. |

If he was interested enough in the term "Blu-ray" to ask you about it, he (and the public at large) will find out that it is a high def format. Saying "Blu-ray high definition" right after "DVD" is more confusing than helpful imo. Like I said, it makes it sound like the movie that they are promoting is also available on HD-DVD. I doubt your friend would have been any clearer re Blu-ray if he had seen one of these ads. In fact, what ad did he see that made him ask you about it? |

For Paidgeek and others who know about the PS3's inards...
I *need* to know how the PS3 is handling TrueHD decoding over SPDIF output when the menu selection for "bitstream" is disabled allowing only for PCM output. Does it extract the lossy 640 "core" to PCM and then downfold to 2.0 or does it indeed decode the TrueHD lossless and downfold to 2.0? I'm trying to get my head around the difference I heard between the PCM and TrueHD on Spiderman 3 (comparing in 2.0 PCM over SPDIF). If the PS3 isn't passing any TrueHD over that output regardless of the menu configuration, I need to know! I want to make sure I don't think I'm reviewing the fidelity of an audio stream when I'm really not. Still saving (and waiting) for the right HDMI 1.3 decoder to come along... |

PaidGeek,
I recently noticed an article at High Def Digest, where Fox has announced that their upcoming "Sunshine" "Bonus View" BD will be compatible with Profile 1.0 players. http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...r_Q1_2008/1118 What procedures are Sony Pictures putting in place to ensure that these new "bonus view" BDs will be compatible. Thanks |
