I saw on the back of SP3 it says Chinese Mandarin and Chinese Cantonese subtitles. This is quite incorrect. It should be Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.

On a related note, Mandarin speakers mostly don't understand Cantonese and vice versa. So Chinese movies in either dialect really need to have Chinese subtitles for the best enjoyment for Chinese speaking viewers (who don't want to read English subtitles). That shouldn't take up much space.

Penton, I just completed a viewing of Pearl Harbor (on blu-ray of course), and by the end I couldn't help but asking myself if we were living up to the values of all the people that died so we could sit on our asses watching movies and playing games. This movie impacted me and reminded me of who we have to thank for our freedoms. Thanks for reminding us all.

I would like to say thanks about a little thing that struck me while watching Spiderman 3 this evening. This little thing is a fix to a little nuisance that manifested itself, from what I have gathered, on some but not all displays.

This little nuisance was the resolution changes between the FBI screen and the commentary disclaimer and any other tidbit before the main feature. Usually, the change was from 1080p to 1080i and back to 1080p. Not adjusting to changes very well, my front projector always lost the "no" overscan setting as a result; thus, requiring a resetting.

I recall someone in this thread, just a couple of months ago, asking about keeping the preliminaries in 1080p for the reason above and others. I believe I observed all the preliminaries in 1080p on Spiderman 3. I know it is probably a subtle fix for many, but I certainly appreciate it.

I'm sitting exactly 3 picture heights from my 46" XBR4 and although Blu-rays look fantastic, HDTV look OK (1080i CBS-HD) to mediocre (720p FOX-HD and ABC-HD) to terrible (1080i NBC-HD). This is OTA, two stations have SD sub-channels and two don't, so I think overall it is fairly average a little above average as far as HD broadcasts go.

I'm thinking 3.5 to 4 picture heights would be the good minimum for watching TV channels. I almost wish there's an "underscan" option to shrink the screen -- the 2x option for PS3's DVD upscaling is very nice in this regard, as is effectively makes the screen a little smaller and sharper.

For Blu-rays, 3 picture heights is perfect. I can even lean forward to make it 2.5 or 2 when I want to see some more details.

Also are the Blu-ray profiles officially called Initial Standard Profile, Final Standard Profile (marketed as Bonus View), and BD-Live?

gandalf, I like to watch movies at 2 picture heights (I make the "Scope" height the same as the "Widescreen") for that big screen effect I get at theaters. The bests BDs can do that

BD continues to stomp HD DVD in Japan, but total next gen disc sales for July 2007 were less than 20,000 units...less than 1,000 HD DVD disc sold through in July. For those bad at math, that means 19,000 BD discs sold through, or 19% more than HD DVD. A 1.9:1 advantage for BD, in other words.

I think paramount gave math lessons to HD DVD fans

Dunno if everything is made up to try to humor himself (he says something about made up report early in the post), but that's still lol.

(hint: 1800% more, and a ratio of 19:1)

I noticed that Sony PCL did the encoding for Bandai Visual's Blu-Ray release of Patlabor: The Movie. Do you know anything about what goes on there? If so, do you know if they are also doing Akira, and what's going on with that release? It's been delayed for months with no news on a new release date.

I don't know anything about the "Akira" release, but the people at PCL are very good. PCL stands for Photo Chemical Lab and they used to do film processing. These days they do DVD and Blu-ray authoring and a few other things. They pretty much have the same key equipment that we have at SPE such as encoders, tape machines and so on.

I have Dish network and have been a subscriber to their HD offerings since the days when they had about 8 channels. Their HD picture falls apart at times because they don't have the bandwidth for difficult scenes, whether it is an MP4 or MP2 channel. I agree that broadcast news does not need to be watched at theatrical viewing angles. The best set-up in my opinion is to use the LCD for typical viewing, then drop a front view screen in front of the LCD with a Sony VPL-VW60 for watching movies at 100". One of these days, I'll have to work on that. The cobblers children have no shoes etc. etc.
